Arctic Sea Ice Extent Up 25% Since 2012

Arctic sea ice extent is up 25% over the past five years. Green shows ice gain since August 30, 2012.

2017     2012

Extent is fourth highest in a decade.

There has been no trend since this date in 2006.

Russian charts show a 14% increase of 70% or more sea ice (orange) for this date, over last year.

Another climate expert has thrown in his thirty pieces of silver…

Pope Francis, who has a strong belief in the science of climate change, called upon world leaders on Wednesday to “listen to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor, who suffer most because of the unbalanced ecology.”

Sorry Frankie, but the Earth does not cry, or starve.

    • AndyG55 says:

The Poor suffer MOST because of the insanity of massive waste of crops, land and finance on this moronic anti-CO2 anti-LIFE AGW scam.

Wake up pope, and stay off the ceremonial wine, poor half-witted goose !!

      • Brad says:

Religions love poor people, as they offer them salavtion from their sins which have brought about their plight.

        • gator69 says:

The church of CAGW hates poor people, especially poor brown people, whom they starve to death by the millions annually. The Church of the Holy Climate loves rich people, like Gore and many other wealthy vapid celebrities.

    • Colorado Wellington says:

Once upon a time the Church rejected animism but Frank is enlightened and we may soon see the spirits of crying rocks worshipped in the Mass.

    • arn says:

Why doesn’t this guy just asks
for the billions wasted on climate certificates to be redirected to the poor
and instead of turning food into fuels giving this food to the poor
and suggesting that every country reduces the military budget by 20%
and giving this money to the poor?

But that”s not part of NWO Agenda.

      • gator69 says:

        You answered your own question!

Another quaestion. Is the Pope Catholic? Or Marxist? Can’t be both.

Atheism is a natural and inseparable part of Marxism, of the theory and practice of scientific socialism.
        -Vladimir Lenin

        • Kris Johanson says:

That’s funny, a term like “scientific socialism” coming from Lenin, a revolutionary fanatic who didn’t want to wait for the supposed organic and unilateral peasant uprising which never materialized like it was predicted in the sacred texts, and so hurried the process by going around murdering everyone.

        • arn says:

          Believe it or not:

The day Pope Francis got into power i said:
“The question we(a)ther the pope is catholic
will no longer be rhetorics but real”

As this extremly unique thing that an islam criticizing pope drops his job and being replaced by a jesuit(those guys who got kicked out of countries almost every 8 years in average) smelled very strange)
(and i predicted that his successor will be an islam,NWO & gay agenda buttkisser)

          And guess what:
          islam buttkisser=yeah
          co2 tax= yeah
gay lover= “who am i to judge”(quote:pope francis)
Well Pope.I’m neither from a christian background nor religious but it is written in your books that it is a sin and you have to judge).

((and i’m pretty sure Pope Benedict was ‘convinced’
to give up the holy chair or the media would have trumped him systematically-
Benedict was part of Hitler Youth as little boy.

          • Kris Johanson says:

yeesh, it’s not their brightest hour I guess

          • gator69 says:

Benedict was a great Pope, and smeasring him with the Hitler Youth reference is just wrong. Allow me to correct the record by telling the whole truth…

Ratzinger was conscripted into the Hitler Youth—as membership was required by law for all 14-year-old German boys after March 1939

            http://www.verfassungen.de/de/de33-45/hitlerjugend36.htm

Benedict understood humanity, and that God gave us all free will…

“…this struggle (against all injustice), it was said, would have to be a political struggle, because the structures (of oppression) were strengthened and maintained by politics. Thus redemption became a political process, for which Marxist philosophy offered the essential directions. It became a task that men themselves could — indeed had to — take in hand and became, at the same time, the object of quite practical hopes; faith was changed from ‘theory’ into practice, into concrete redeeming action in the liberation process.”

“…where the Marxist ideology of liberation had been consistently applied, a total lack of freedom had developed, whose horrors were now laid bare before the eyes of the entire world. Wherever politics tries to be redemptive, it is promising too much. Where it wishes to do the work of God, it becomes not divine, but demonic.”
            Pope Benedict XVI

            I miss Pope Benedict.

  3. XYZ says:

Part of the problem is that many people inexplicably enjoy sad movies that make them cry. Those people WANT to be afraid, and climate scientists together with media provide this “entertainment” for them. They feel empowered by getting to be better persons while saving the future of planet from morons with other people money, AND they get to be sad and afraid too. Crisis and drama. They do not want to hear logic and reasoning, because that’s the way they LIKE it. Perhaps their life would be just too purposeless otherwise.

    • RAH says:

They’ve got too much time on their hands and can’t manage it.

      • Kris Johanson says:

XYZ there’s a lot of truth to that. The impulse to signal one’s virtue and save the planet is very very strong. It’s a lot harder to just love your crummy stinking neighbor as you love yourself, and you don’t get any ‘likes’ either

        • Colorado Wellington says:

Virtual online neighbors don’t run their lawn mowers just as you meditate or do a yoga weight loss excercise.

Also, their kids don’t scream and throw balls into your front yard in the precise moment you are ready to literally save the planet again.

          • RAH says:

Well many of you here are my virtual online neighbors but no insult intended, I have some great real neighbors and wouldn’t trade them. My granddaughter insists on seeing Steve my neighbor to the north, every time she visits and Steve loves it! Besides none of you have given me fresh garden produce or let me borrow a lawn mower when mine was on the fritz.

          • Colorado Wellington says:

Borrow a lawn mower? You never mentioned yours was broken!

          • RAH says:

PTO problem on my Craftsman lawn tractor with a 50″ deck. Will get fixed but in the meantime I have been using my neighbors 48″ deck (His other one is a 60″ deck) X Mark industrial grade mower. I do mine and since they get paid to do widow neighbors to the south I do hers as well also as partial compensation for borrowing his. With those two mowers he and his wife can knock out 6 acres they normally do in a little over two hours.

          • Kris Johanson says:

            what’s a lawn?

          • Kris Johanson says:

it looks like her husband is getting in that fairlane convertible with another gal…

  4. Steven Fraser says:

Looks like we are finishing the DMI ice year right at the level that the former charting showed as the top of,the grey area, 550 Gt.

  5. Brad says:

Has anybody ever figured out the normal variation for sea ice extent? What would a 20, 30, 100 year average look like as a box plot?

      • Brad says:

Not long enough, “average” temperature are given as an 30 year mean. And that number is arbitrary at best. Ice maybe more variable/less variable, who knows. Ice extent seems largely dependent upon the vicissitudes of winter arctic storms. Which would make the data more noisy and require a longer period to give a good representative average.

        • sunsettommy says:

You missed something there Brad, since warmist loons keep screaming it is all vanishing before us. That is why I posted this TEN year chart to show that the decline has STOPPED!

        • sunsettommy says:

The variation has been between ZERO to around full summer ice cover during the interglacial.

        • AndyG55 says:

FACT is, Brad that current levels are above what they have been for 90-95% of the last 110,000 years.

We had this little period called “The Little Ice Age”, which was the coldest period of the Holocene, and the sea ice extent, NATURALLY grew to EXTREME levels.

Icelandic records compare the late 1970’s extent as being up there with those extremes.

The actual FACT is that current levels are FAR HIGHER than they have been for all but that short freezing LIA period and a bit before and after.

Do you really think you should judge what is “normal” by looking at a period of BITTER COLD?

    • Andy DC says:

Fake climate scientists always use 1979 as their starting point because 1979 was an outlier year, had the most sea ice since the Little Ice Age. Fake climate scientists know that if you start your charts from a record high level, you can create the delusion of decreasing sea ice, when nothing of the sort is happening in the long term. The sea ice is just returning to a level close to the pre 1979 average after an upward blip.

  6. Frank K. says:

Look at this — ice recovery has already begun! :)

  7. Gerald Machnee says:

    Hey Griff:
6th lowest or 4th highest, which is more serious???

  8. griff says:

So its 25% up in extent from the lowest year on record?

I’m not sure that’s accurate, but yes, it is not as low as the all time record…
    and that is a recovery??

but it is heading for being in the top 3 or 4 lowest records… and still is not at levels seen in 2006 and before, after a decade.

And what about the volume compared to 2012?
what about the amount of thick multi year ice?
what about the thickness of the ice as it approaches lowest extent?

what about the state of the ice through recent winters?

2017 is a cold year and one extreme of the variation in weather which affects annual melt (and annual melt hasn’t finished for this year yet). even in a poor melt season we’re in record low territory for extent and the other measures show the ice is in a poor state.

In another, average year, we’ll see a new record. In a year with weather like 2012 we’ll see it smash all records.

  9. griff says:

and bear in mind the area coloured in yellow on chart at top is not 1005 solid ice -its broken and well under a metre thick

    https://seaice.uni-bremen.de/data/amsr2/today/Arctic_AMSR2_visual.png

    • Mr GrimNasty says:

      Griff says ‘not solid ice’.

You do understand that is normal? NH sea ice is one big slush puppy!

    • Jeff says:

      Now who is the denier?

    • Brad says:

You sure are predictable, more predictable then the weather. If it makes you feel better, all the record high ice extent from the 70’s was all broken and rotten ice too.

    • Latitude says:

The same way it’s always measured…

      You want consistency don’t you?

    • RAH says:

An example of the “news” from Poltico, a trusted source for Griff where she gets some her climate “science” from.

      • Colorado Wellington says:

Fascist Progressives know they must finish off their enemies whenever possible. The best time to attack Texans is when they are down and helping each other, instead of watching who is sneaking up behind their backs.

    • sunsettommy says:

      Yawn…… Zzzzz…

      You are boring,Griff.

Thick ice doesn’t mean solid ice. After all it is FLOATING ice, subject to storms and currents.

    • AndyG55 says:

The area in yellow is from griff’s manic bed-wetting !!

Gees, compare to nearly all of the last 10,000 years..

THERE IS ONE HECK OF A LOT OF SEA ICE UP THERE. !!

      • Griff says:

and a heck of a lot less than in 1979.

when is the decline going to turn around?

        • Gator69 says:

Was the Earth formed in 1979? Or is this just another dishonest cherry pick to support your genocide on poor brown people?

        • Gerald Machnee says:

**when is the decline going to turn around?**
It has. You are a denier and pretend not to notice.
There. I answered your question, why not answer mine?

        • AndyG55 says:

Yes, but as you well know , The 1979 level was up there with those of the LIA , the coldest period in 10,000 years.

Do you REALLY want to go back to that cold period.

Your wet bed will freeze !!

Wouldn’t you choose to live somewhere warmer, say southern UK, where you have access to fossil fuel electricity for heating in winter ?

  10. oldbrew says:

Game over for Pen Hadow – too much sea ice. Even as he backed off he was still claiming the ice was melting.

    http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2017/08/31/pen-hadow-gives-up-blocked-by-sea-ice/

    • Colorado Wellington says:

It’s a relay race, Oldbrew. Pen Haddow turned around and he’s heading south but he passed the baton to fellow Arctic Missionary Admiral Jim Hunt who will talk his way through the ice to the North Pole. The Admiral is good at that.

The Arctic Mission will be a fantastic success in the media. You will see reports that the ice is gone.

      • XYZ says:

They will tell they had to turn back for safety reasons. Crew heroically wanted to continue through soft ice but captain did not want to take any unnecessary risks.

  11. John Niclasen says:

Constructive criticism: The MASIE dataset has no data for day 241 in the year 2014, which is also missing from your graph.

I include graphs for day 240-242 from the start of the dataset, and the y-axis goes from zero. Extent is about fifth highest in a decade according to MASIE.

    Keep up the good work!

  12. Marsh says:

The psychological condition of devout Warmists , would blind them to any possibility that
growing levels of ICE could represent Cooling (we witnessed that with Antarctic records). It’s equally hypocritical ; the way in which Warmists are attracted to any melting ; wind , geothermal , the cause is immaterial…
