Think of it as yet another opportunity for Chinese industrial price fixing and import duty protected product dumping. Thanks to German-driven PV price increases, the replacement solar farm will cost 3-5x as much, and those wind turbines will cost at least as much to replace as they would to rebuild.
Pretty ugly. A coal or gas fired station would have weathered it much better. Not that it matters that much in the context of the speed of return of service since it’s going to take a lot of work just to get the transmission grid up and running again. Those people are in for a long period of hardship. Back in 1929-30 the US Aircraft carrier CV-2 Lexington supplied power to Tacoma, WA for a few weeks. The Nimitz class carriers in service don’t have the electric drive but the newer ones of the Gerald R. Ford Class do and could probably supply essential power needs for hospitals and such if they wanted to.
If only the archaic transmission network of string between poles had been upgraded for resilience i.e. buried, no doubt the cash wasted on windmills & PV would have more than covered it! The ‘proper’ generation plants survived pretty much in running order, just the grid smashed through lack of forethought/planning for known weather possibilities.
I’ll say it again, it is incredible that in America today, virtually all power lines are still strung from poles like they were over a century ago. Our grid is a Model T, in the age of supercars.
In our Australia’s North West, most towns have underground power because of cyclone activity. Some older towns still have some overhead using steel poles, gradually this is being replaced when governments have funds available.
There are no commercial wind or solar, that would be suicide, however the latest new lefty government are talking about it!

Not really an issue for the island overall however; only 2% of it’s electricity comes from renewables. Most comes from burning diesel (47%), natural gas (34%) and coal (17%).

The scenario in the video above is a thing most people even haven’t considered.
They usually think you built a windmill and it will run forever with a little bit maintenance
(not knowing how much concrete for the fundament is needed or how often the gears break and that the fundament breaks also after a few decades)
The damage looks to me to be related to blade failures. I wonder what the spec was for max wind speeds when feathered.
Steven, that’s possible, but some wind power experts believe the operators of this Puerto Rico wind farm didn’t follow best practices. There is no record of the wind turbines being blessed by Santería sub-contractors or other local practitioners as is common at green installations around the world.
For example, the Auwahi power plant on the Ulupalakua Ranch on Haleakala was fine for several years and only developed minor problems when it was not properly re-blessed according to Siemens maintenance schedule.

“Green energy” is a pipe dream perpetuated by ‘progressives’ who don’t understand simple thermodynamics and economics (or arithmetic for that matter).
The scam is propped up only through our tax $$$ and subsidies (remember Solyndra?). If we *doubled* the amount, then it would be up to 2-4% of our total energy sources–how exciting. If we left it entirely to the market it all would pretty much collapse on itself. How about the useless tinkertoy bird killing machines that have popped up all over the place? Any of those in the middle of the CU campus yet Tony? ha ha.
You don’t run the industrial-military complex on solar and biomass, these might be power a light bulb in a shack in the woods, that’s about it. Good grief. What runs through the mind of these mental midget morons when they step on a modern jet-fueled aircraft, do they thing it’s being run by algae? Complete disconnect in the minds of these people. But, it’s their religion and they ‘believe’ in it, just like they ‘believe’ in global warming.
And also quite dangerous as well apparently….

Yes, also….. there’s enough Hydrogen-3 (hydrogen with a couple neutrons) in the oceans to basically provide us unlimited energy. H3 is produced by bombardment by solar/cosmic particles (at least that’s my understanding). Could we spend the $10million/day currently spent on GW-related research on developing a fusion reactor instead? (a rhetorical question)
The house I moved into a year ago has a shop that has 40 solar panels on the south facing side of the roof that the previous owners installed and they generate around 900kwh a month in the summer and I forget how much in the winter. I don’t know how it is elsewhere but here in Ontario Canada they have a program called microFIT where you signed into a 20 year contract to sell back the power they generate into the grid and the money they pay you is pretty crazy as the kwh rate is I think over double what the peak hour rate is from the electric company. These panels generate around 5-6k each year and the contract has 16 years left. Early in the program I think a decade+ ago they used to let people use the electricity generated while also paying an even higher rate than what we get which blows my mind. I believe I read that every 2 years the money they pay per kwh is declining for new contracts so I gather it will eventually be a situation where very few will take part in it as it won’t be cost effective.
I think the whole system is nuts given the money they pay per kwh yet I like getting this extra money for something I didn’t make an outlay for (and the purchase price of the house didn’t seem to be inflated to factor in the cost of this system) as it covers our yearly electricity and heating bills. If the lefties are going to come up with crazy ideas like this then I prefer that I am on the side that at least gets something from it rather than just gets screwed over.
A bunch of houses/properties around me (rural area) have solar panels as well to take advantage of this lunacy.
