On September 26, 1988, experts predicted the 1,196 islands of the Maldives would drown in the next thirty years. That date has passed, and they only missed by 1,196 islands.
26 Sep 1988 – Threat to islands
The current situation there appears desperate. Particularly since they ran out of water by 1992.
I think i’ll launch my little row boat….paddle across the oceans, and rescues as many as I can…………….NOT….
maybe i’ll fly in, and access the situation directly from the beach front hotel and see the devastation first hand….
Wow! Diehard and Dukakis, those were the days…
Great reference to Get Smart! Loved that show.
BTW, isn’t the rise of sea level accelerating? So the islands are probably 1 meter underwater by now. Your photo must be upside down.
Post some pictures of all the investments —
building so many new resorts
on islands that are supposedly going to
be underwater resorts soon ??
ha ha
Here are some pictures at the link:

I hope all those people that short sold beachfront property in 1988 are happy.
Like the polar bear drownings, this story is soooo passe. These lies, I mean stories, have been updated to vastly improved modern versions. So just ignore this evidence and pay attention only to the new stuff coming from behind the curtain today.
You don’t want to have to keep track of that stuff we said way back then, do you?
Not really lies, unless you count inordinately stupid predictions, which are probably worse anyway.
They obviously didn’t predict this:

I believe there was a study looking at the the photographic surface area of the Maldives compared to the first photo aerial photo from the WW2 period and it found the islands actually had accreted about 2% more land area over the period of 70 years.
