National Climate Assessment

“the warmest daily temperature of the year increased in some parts of the West over the past century (Figure 6.3), but there were decreases in almost all locations east of the Rocky Mountains. In fact, all eastern regions experienced a net decrease (Table 6.2), most notably the Midwest (about 2.2°F [1.2°C]) and the Southeast (roughly 1.5°F [0.8°C]). The decreases in the eastern half of Nation, particularly in the Great Plains, are mainly tied to the unprecedented summer heat of the 1930s Dust Bowl era”

  1. Conrad Ziefle says:

Simply because something doesn’t look right, does not make it not right. One thing you learn as a scientist is to look for an extraordinary cause when you see at anomaly in the data. In this case, it surely is not CO2.
Is that a problem for him?
A real scientist would search for other data which might affirm the anomaly or discredit it. The newspaper reference although not quantitative do support the legitimacy of the anomaly in the data. Next, a real scientist would make a hypothesis and see if the data supports the hypothesis or not.
For instance, in 1816 much of the world had the anomaly of a very cold summer. It was called the Year Without Summer. Mr. Dessler would simply have said, “One thing you learn as a scientist is to look at a plot and say, “This isn’t right.”
However, real scientists looked at the data and said, “I wonder what might have caused that?” and they discovered that the eruption of Mount Tambora on April 5th, 1815 was the major cause of the Year Without Summer.
Some scientists spend their lifetime averaging data into flattened curves, and others explore for the forces which cause deviations in the data curves.
In this case, it was not CO2.
    Does that bother him?

Motto of the CCCP (Climate Clowns’ Church’s Priest) :

The data do not match your beliefs ? Discard them and call names at those who dare showing the facts.

  3. It doesn’t show a correlation with CO2 concentration, therefore it must be wrong. So by discarding all contrary data we ‘prove’ global warming. For my next trick, I shall prove black is white. That pretty well summarises the climate science modus operandi. Real science tries to refute existing theories. Perhaps Dessler should be nominated for the Lysenko Award for his contribution to junk science.

  4. Richard says:

the head of NOAA years ago didn’t LIKE the ocean temps reported by freighters so he said WELL THAT cannot be right the temperatures should be hotter from heat of the engines- skipping the fact temps are taken on the Bow – front not the back at engine cooling discharges

    • Stuart Hamish says:

One of the climate-gate emails [ Phil Jones ?] admitted the SST’s south of a certain latitude were ” mostly made up “

      • Conrad Ziefle says:

Given that the temperature record is, as Tony has pointed out, limited to about three regions of the globe, the climate shamans have free rein to create whatever record they want in the rest of the global. That isn’t science, but that does not stop them from doing it.
By the way, I believe without a lot of evidence, because I haven’t looked for it, that the oceans control the climate more than the atmosphere does. My reason is that the oceans have a thermal mass that is about 200 times larger than the atmosphere’s.
Taking temperature readings from ships is just skimming the surface as far as ocean temperatures go.

  5. Michael Peinsipp says:

Is it true that ‘Dresler’ used LOW temps in HIS graphs???
    What a maroon!

  6. Eli the Pit Bulldog says:

Meanwhile democrats and a good size handful of rinos are trying to erase the US
Here is Vladimir Putin’s speech on the economy in Russia. From Saint Petersburg last week. He’s about unleashing the free market, lowering taxes, promoting entrepreneurship, deregulation of business….quite frankly, it’s an amazing speech. Odds are with this leadership, Russia wins. Compare to what’s happening in Western Europe and the US.

  7. Disillusioned says:

Andrew Dessler appears to be another minister in the Ministry of Truth [propaganda]. The Ministry of Truth has a lot of ministers.

  8. Terry Shipman says:

Last Sunday I had a discussion with our pastor’s wife concerning the heat wave we are currently experiencing here in Arkansas. She is convinced that it is now been hotter the last couple of decades than it has ever been. I told her that is not true. The 1930’s were far hotter. She doesn’t believe that. As one who has a degree in history I have studied the Depression years. So this week I Googled US high temp records and I was not surprised to see that over half the states set their records prior to 1940 with 24 setting the record during the 1930’s. And by comparison only 3 states (if I counted right) set their record since the year 2000. I downloaded the same chart today from this post to my cell phone so I can whip it out when I’m talking to a Climate Believer such as our pastor’s wife. I can also point out that it was 120F in Ozark, here in Arkansas, on August 10, 1936. She and I both lived through the heat wave of 1980 here in Arkansas, the worst in our memory, and it didn’t get that hot anywhere in Arkansas.

I was stunned to see that the claim is made that July 2021 was the hottest July on record. I know that was bogus since I was alive last year. Tony, I thank you for the research you did on July 1936. Wow! The second week of July ‘36 every state reached at least 90F, 40 states reached at least 100F, 17 states reached at least 110F, South Dakota reached 115F and California reached 120F (which was not even a state record for California). I defy anyone to try to tell me that last July was that bad.

Oh, the answer MUST be that folks didn’t know how to read thermometers back then.

  9. TimC says:

Dessler’s announcement may be the greatest breakthrough in the history of climate science. No longer will there be any need for climate researchers to construct complex computer models. Just draw a line on a chart representing a plot of future temperature or sea level or whatever, and then show it to Andrew Dessler. He will tell you, just by looking at it, whether it looks right or not. This should save the taxpayers billions: No more funding for NASA or NOAA or any of the various universities for building and running climate computer models. Oh happy day!

  10. Karl Marx's Dead Corpse says:

They are using low temperature trends and then averaging them with high temperature trends. What appears to be happening is that temperature differences might be decreasing but the low temperature reading might be increasing. I think this is likely more to do with land use change than to Carbon Dioxide. It may also have to do with increase in vegetative matter – which may increase overnight humidity as there is more water mass released when plants go into night respiration mode.
