“cold-blooded assassination”

Former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt told German TV the operation could have incalculable consequences in the Arab world at a time of unrest there.

“It was quite clearly a violation of international law,” .

It was a view echoed by high-profile Australian human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson.

“It’s not justice. It’s a perversion of the term. Justice means taking someone to court, finding them guilty upon evidence and sentencing them,” Robertson told Australian Broadcasting Corp television from London.

“This man has been subject to summary execution, and what is now appearing after a good deal of disinformation from the White House is it may well have been a cold-blooded assassination.”

Robertson said bin Laden should have stood trial, just as World War Two Nazis were tried at Nuremburg or former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was put on trial at the war crimes tribunal in The Hague after his arrest in 2001.

“The last thing he wanted was to be put on trial, to be convicted and to end his life in a prison farm in upstate New York. What he wanted was exactly what he got – to be shot in mid-jihad and get a fast track to paradise and the Americans have given him that.”

    Steve,

I agree with most of this. though i think it is much simpler. Having Osama as a prisoner was WAY to fraught with political landmines. Kill him and the political problems go away. No one is going to care what the leftists say about legalities, and people are going to laugh at the right wingers that attack him for not taking prisoner someone responsible fo the worst terrorist attack in history.
as I have ben saying for years, allowing the Bush policies to be unpunished has created the precedent for allowing all future presidents to do whatever they want in those areas. I still don;t understand why the right wing is not screaming their heads off about illegal surveillance and the ability f the prize to designate enemy combatants, form someone as intent on destroying America as Obama is.

    • You suffer Bush derangement syndrome.

Saddam was captured, tried by his peers in public, and executed.

“…allowing the Bush policies to be unpunished has created the precedent for allowing all future presidents to do whatever they want in those areas.” – TD

Presidents already had such powers. Why did the left allow FDR to go “unpunished?”

Actual war? Does that mean that when Bin Laden conspires to commit mass murder and wages Jihad against Americans the victims are not actually dead?

I have some special ‘friends’ in Chicago that Obama should have spoken to before the UBL mision. They would have offered him sage advice on the UBL special ops mission. My Chicago ‘friends’ would have advised him that one of the key elements in carrying out such a mission is not to leave any witnesses. Mrs. Bin Laden will likely be hitting the Arab and EU sympathizer TV talk show circuit, giving her account of this “crime” as Schmidt refers to it. This will haunt Obama as all the the positive press here in the USA will eventually give way to a world press that will haunt him on this issue forever. Maybe we could set up a little contest to see who can pick the date that is closet to the date of the first time someone calls for Obama to be tried at the Hague. lol

at a time of unrest there

Is there ever a time of rest there?

  4. John Silver says:

All this just to interrupt Trump’s TV program.

Dubya, upon reading the papers, would have said to himself with a slight grin “welcome to the real world Obummer”
Capturing OBL would’ve been no good. There is no way he could be convicted in a fair trial. No evidence obtained in Gitmo would’ve been admissable. A dilemma, what to do what to do.

The war on terror (as it is dubbed) is not your everyday moggie breed war. The ones trying to kill us are not playing by the rules and revelled in the fact that we did try very hard to play by the rules. They saw this as our weakness.

Those who insist we shouldn’t “lower ourselves to their level” or “we must stick to the law come hell or high water” have never been in a dangerous fight.
SOMETIMES YOUR OWN SURVIVAL IS THE ONLY IMPORTANT THING. YOU SURVIVE BY WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY AT THE TIME, FAIR/UNFAIR, LEVEL OF FORCE etc DOESN’T ENTER INTO IT.
If Obama ever has the guts to state this, he will (eventually) be seen as one of the great presidents.

Sure, there will be the bleeding heart pooffo pinko commo leftards, but there always are, who gives a $hit.

C’mon Barrack, ask the missus to cup the pair in her palm and tell you how much they weigh.

Tony Duncan is just a font of left wing talking points although like most libz he wants to be considered a “thoughtful” person. Tony D. never deviates one micron from the far left gibberish from AGW right on down the line.

    • Tony Duncan says:

      Justa,

That made me smile. Please tell me what “left gibberish from the AGW” is “right on down the line” and I will tell you if i deviate from it. Considering I have almost never expressed my specific beliefs on most issues presented here, I am impressed with your mind reading ability. Numerous times I have pressed people to state what my beliefs are about particular issues after they have projected their bogeyman leftist label on me, yet no one has ever taken me up on the offer. So please let the rest of the readers know what I really believe.
