Hansen Smoking Gun : Sea Level To Rise 1,000 Metres

The Guardian, Friday 29 April 2005

The world is getting warmer – and US scientists now know precisely how much warmer. They calculated the radiation from the sun, the heat reflected back into space, and the rising temperature of the seas and say the extra warmth is equivalent to a 1 watt lightbulb shining constantly over an area of 1 sq metre everywhere on the planet.

That would raise average temperatures by 0.6C before the end of the century, they report in Science today. Warming at that level, maintained over 10,000 years, would melt enough ice to raise sea levels by a kilometre.

“This energy imbalance is the smoking gun that we have been looking for,” said James Hansen, director of Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. “It shows that our estimates of the human-made and natural climate forcing agents are about right, and they are driving the Earth to a warmer climate.”

Ninety percent of the US will be underwater, like Manhattan’s West Side Highway has been since 2008.

Hansen is the Mystic Meg of science, the Deepak Chopra of climate.

““This energy imbalance is the smoking gun that we have been looking for,” said James Hansen…”

Umm, the energy imbalance cannot be measured with existing instruments, so Hansen fudged it with a climate model, and then used it as the (presumably) observational smoking gun that he has been looking for. Unbelievable.

Perhaps Hansen suffers from a serious medical condition known as Climo-copremesis- uncontrolled vomiting of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Change (CACC).

Also, note the correction in the original news report. The GISS document qualified their dead-certain prediction of a 1000 meter sea level rise with ‘if there were that much ice’.
What a stupid prediction. This is Ehrlichian.

  5. “The following correction was printed in the Guardian’s Corrections and clarifications column, Monday May 2 2005

The warning from US scientists that warming at the present rate over 10,000 years would cause sea levels to rise by a kilometre is mathematically correct but physically impossible.”

That about sums up the whole field doesn’t it?

How is it possibly for this lunacy to be permitted and funded by today’s governments?

The political fix is in Paul. UAH is now a target as Trenberth publically made statements accusing them of flawed data. Anyone that disagrees with the IPCC and/or the hockey team, is now a target. AR5 data will be tortured to support the meme that things are worse than they thought, immediate action is required and $$$$ is needed if the world is to be saved from drowning and starvation. While Mike Mann flies to Sweeden to get decorated with another medal of scientific honor, the heretics Christy and Spencer get the wrath of the witch burners.

The continent has about 90% of the world’s ice (and thereby about 70% of the world’s fresh water). If all of this ice were melted, sea levels would rise about 60 m

where from should come the remaining 940 meters, mr James Hansen ?

Ummmm where will the 1km rise come from?Which water? http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/2010/gallery/global-water-volume.html

Um…do these people not realize that the ice caps spend half the year in darkness…so it remains cold there most of the time? Haven’t they heard of the Arctic Sun? Jeez…
