I Thought Ice Water Was Cold

Supposedly there are massive amounts of glacial ice and melt water pouring off the Greenland Ice Sheet into the surrounding seawater. Freshwater is less dense than seawater, so the cold water should be pooling on the surface.

How odd that SSTs around Greenland are above normal.

I wonder if climate scientists use ice cubes to warm up their coffee.

    1: Under sea geothermal activity!
2: An active Gulf Stream flowing past Greenland
3: Freshly melted water, even if it flowed below the ice or even over it would be colder than the ocean surface.
Yes fresh water is lighter than salt water or there would be no fresh water on the Pacific Islands for people to use. Especially in the north where lots of eveporation has taken place before the water reaches the higher latitudes. That is where the water sinks to circulate around the globe.

But it’s cold up there currently, so no melt. However in the summer when you would expect melting what do we see?

I guess there is massive amount of melt water running off Greenland during the summer. Thanks for confirming!

It the anomaly so why would it be odd How odd that temps are above normal if it was warming? It should be pretty much expected with melting ice.
