A new research by scientists has found that variations in atmosphere carbon dioxide around 40 million years ago were tightly linked to changes in global temperature.

The rapid increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels around 40 million years ago approximately coincides with the rise of the Himalayas and may be related to the disappearance of an ocean between India and Asia as a result of plate tectonics.

“Understanding the relationship between the Earth’s climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide in the geological past can provide insight into the extent of future global warming expected to result from carbon dioxide emission caused by the activities of humans,” said Steven Bohaty of the University of Southampton.

In other words, they found two regional proxies of temperature and CO2 from approximately the same time period. They assumed that CO2 was the driver without any evidence. Then they implicitly assumed that plate tectonics was occurring much faster than at present.

That explanation is standard AGW fare, and pretty dodgy. Organic rich sediments get subducted all the time. There is no reason to believe it occurred any faster 40 million years ago – because the rate of plate movement is fairly constant. Using the words “disappeared” and “crashed” sound dramatic, but these events occurred over millions of years.

    The rock outside my window is wet and it rained. I know that every time the rock is wet it rains so the rock being wet causes the rain. I need to find a way to keep the rock dry to stop it from raining!

      Sounds like you need to GeoEngineer a solution. Be sure when you apply for your grant you state it is to save the world, that should get a few more bucks for your project.

    With out reading the article …I would say that it is hilarious. When dating tectonic events the constraint is +/- X million.yrs. figuring out the CO2 for a similar time frame, +/- X million years, making such correlations……….. I laugh so hard I almost drooled.

    I just simplified a plate reconstruction for about 500 million years ago. Talking to one of the authors of the reconstruction you actually get a real feel for hoe much `guess work’ is involved.

    Sometimes the only way to get funding is to link something to C02……. or should I say link everything……… crap!

    No, in their words they found that “variations in atmosphere carbon dioxide around 40 million years ago were tightly linked to changes in global temperature.” and the evidence they have comes from the research of John Tyndall and Svante Arrhenius.

      Another two losers whose work on CO2 was falsified while they were still alive and some Yahoo recently pulled the junk research from the junk science grave to find a new source of funding for starving scientists!

    Amazing how much you can tell from a news article about a scientific paper. But Mike, you have your cycles. Can’t you extrapolate backwards and show that one of them caused the himalayas to rise.
    Another reasonable assertion. An assertion only mind you, and one that is reasonable, and Steve posts it as another proof of the idiocy of scientists. and his acolytes wave incense and murmur their “here here’s”
