Who Claims the island? I know when living in the Las Vegas Valley I could see a longer distance than 51 miles. It depends on the elevation that one is observing from and the elevation of what is being observed. It appears there are mountains on the Russian side of the straight or what will be known as Berengia when the sea level falls again! 😉
Without having been there it appears you should be able to see from one side to the next on a clear day.

Actually, Little Diomede Island, Alaska lies only 2.5 miles west of Big Diomede Island, Russia in the Bering Strait, which separates Siberia from Alaska. The International Date Line runs through the Bering Strait, so looking across the water from Little Diomede to Big Diomede is actually looking into yesterday. The Date Line mostly coincides with the 180 meridian, but curves irregularly to avoid crossing over land masses.
