The frequency of mild winter days has dropped sharply in Wyoming over the past century, and over the past twenty years the frequency of cold winter nights has increased. The last five years have averaged the most cold nights of the past century.
We are expecting record cold again Thursday morning.
Last year February 22 was the coldest on record here in Cheyenne, Wyoming by a wide margin, with a maximum temperature of -2F (-19C) This year will likely be second or third coldest.
The forecast minimum temperature of -14F (-24C) would beat last years record of -12F.

Winter temperatures here in Wyoming have been declining over the last twenty years. So far this winter it has been the 14th coldest on record and coldest in thirty years – with cold forecast for the rest of the month. The trend has been downwards since the 1930’s, other than a blip from 1988 to 1999, with the warmest winter occurring in 1934. The winter of 1934 averaged thirteen degrees warmer than this winter.
