Valentines Day Trends

Valentines Day temperatures in the southeast US have declined nearly ten degrees over the past century as CO2 has increased.

The warmest Valentines Day in the US occurred in 1921, which was the second warmest year in the US since 1895 after 1934. The coldest Valentines Day was a century later in 2021.

The percent of days over 60F during 1921 was the highest since 1895.

The heatwave of 1921 extended around the world.

Wyoming’s New Congresswoman

We met Wyoming’s new representative in Congress today.  Harriet Hageman is everything Liz Cheney wasn’t – sharp, knowledgeable, articulate, honest and lives in Wyoming – a couple of blocks away.

She is going to be a powerful force in Republican politics, and has been involved in energy/climate law for decades. I was impressed by her grasp and ability to articulate about many key issues without missing a beat.

UN Advisor : Carbon Dioxide Caused The Turkey Earthquake

“By Prof ?brahim Özdemir, UN advisor

On Monday, earthquakes in my country Turkey and neighbouring Syria left a trail of unprecedented devastation and a death toll surpassing 16,000 people at the last count.

We do not know for sure what triggered this horrific natural disaster, but we do know there is growing scientific evidence that climate change increases the risk of such tremors, together with tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

Climate and weather-related disasters have surged five-fold over the past five decades, killing over two million people, with 91% of the casualties in developing countries.”

Climate change is triggering more earthquakes. Big Oil’s interests are a factor | Euronews

Death rates from natural disasters are down 97.5% over the past century, and 75% over the last five decades.

Fires Of 1898

This week in 1898, one of the largest forest fires in US history occurred – during winter. If that happened now, climate scientists would say with great certainty that the fires were caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

Unhiding The Decline 4.0 For Windows

I have released a new version of the Unhiding The Decline climate graphing software. Download UNHIDING.zip from this link and unzip it.

Put the UNHIDING.zip file somewhere in your filesystem where you want to extract it.

After extracting, navigate to the ghcnd_hcn directory

Type cmd in the Windows Explorer address bar

That will open up a Windows command prompt in the current directory.

Type in ghcn.exe US.list states=ILIN summer

In a few minutes this graph should pop up, showing average summer maximum temperatures at all Illinois and Indiana United States Historical Climatology Network Stations.

There are a lot of features you can access, and I will probably make video showing some of them.  The source code is in the same directory in the file ghcn.py.  If you have a python3 environment on any platform, you might be able to run the command as :

python3 ghcn.py US.list states=ILIN summer

Forest Fires of 1898

This week in 1898, the United States, Australia and New Zealand were all experiencing massive forest fires. Three million acres of the Carolinas burned in just a few hours – in the middle of winter. Later that year the northwest quadrant of Colorado was on fire.
