Borge and Peter1 both have completed the NW passage now, well on the way to becoming the first ships to do a circumnavigation. Well done.
It was helped by very little ice in the NW passage due to the warm temps you pointed out before Steve in Canada.

I found the map, again, of one of the trips. It shows they did not stay in the Arctic. The went to the south of Greenland, not to the north of it. They went to the south side of Iceland. And the the south of Norway.They never planned on staying in the Arctic.
They also never planned to stay in the water all the way:
this three-hulled sailboat can attain a speed of 20 knots, and can easily be pulled onto the shore to avoid pack ice.
He says it’s been done before:
the history of the Arctic waters. Especially Roald Amundsens expeditions through both passages with the ships Gjøa and Maud.

The weather forecast is a swag … at best. I was checking on the weekly forecast for Barrow, AK and it kept showing temps ranging from 35°F to 45°F … suddenly, the range has dropped and for the next week it looks to range from 25°F to 35°F. Looks like weather forecasters can also act like media critters — bobble heads. So, does anybody out there do any thinking, or are they all good for nothing but reading whatever press release is placed in front of their unseeing eyes?

The article is not about the McClure Straits.
Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada can be reached through the various routes in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is not uncommon for ships to pass through those routes. To say it is ridiculous.
I’m wondering how many went through the McClure Straits before heading to Inuvik?
Also, the article is not about ships making it through for the first time ever. It’s about an increase. The increase in ships could be because of the increase interest in the Northwest Passage in recent years. If so, it would then not be because the waters have less ice in them—as some would want the reader to infer. If the increase in ships is because of the increase in interest there would be nothing unprecedented in this news.
That is usually what happens with global warming news: things are inferred but in the real world what is inferred is not happening.
It’s like the stories that say things like “Worst hurricane in 50 years”. There was a hurricane as bad 50 years ago but the implication is something unusual is happening this time.

Summers last for 2 years in global warming. That’s what some people must have been believing when they talked about how many ships got through this summer. Or maybe those some don’t pay attention to what’s going on and then say things that make them look like they’re not paying attention. Some people in religions around the world do that—they just believe things without thinking. But of course, no one in this comment thread would be like that. I’m just talking about other people when I say that. 😉
A 2 year summer……..um……ok……you can do anything you want in global warming. Heck, you can even fly around the world in a Gulf Stream Jet while telling others to reduce their carbon footprint. Or, you can say you care about poor people and then say you want people’s energy bill to ‘necessarily skyrocket’. I guess poor people don’t have bills to pay.

Apparently that cruise ship MV Clipper Adventurer didn’t hit an unmarked rock as they reported:
“We were simply following the chart that we had and right where there wasn’t any indication that there was something in the water, there was this large rock,” said Bradley-Swan during a phone interview.

A salvage crew has been up there and: “On 18 September 2010 the ship was sucessfully towed into Cambridge Bay.”
This could turn out to be an expensive 911 call. It will be interesting to see if the insurance companies will continue to insure cruise ships in the NWP.
