Cold Winters Due To Global Warming

CO2 is amazing stuff. The extra heat makes the air cold.

Global Warming could cool down temperatures in winter

The overall warming of the earth’s northern half could result in cold
winters. The shrinking of sea-ice in the eastern Arctic causes some regional
heating of the lower levels of air – which  may lead to strong anomalies in
atmospheric airstreams, triggering an overall cooling of the northern
continents, a study recently published in the Journal of Geophysical
Research shows. “These anomalies could triple the probability of cold winter
extremes in Europe and northern Asia,” says Vladimir Petoukhov, lead author
of the study and climate scientist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate
Impact Research. “Recent severe winters like last year’s or the one of
2005-06 do not conflict with the global warming picture, but rather
supplement it.”

Methinks they are already covering their backsides as they know we are heading into another cold winter.

  2. Mike Davis says:

This statement is a good example of why ACC is not a testable Hypothesis but the result of combined WAGs used for research grant proposals.

  3. suyts says:

Ahh, the old hot = cold equation. I wish they’d become a little more original. It’s like a good joke told too many times. Its just not funny any more.

    And war is peace.

It’s doublethink. Someone should tell the warmmongers that 1984 was not meant as a guide book for living yourlife.

      • suyts says:

You’d hope they’d come to that conclusion themselves, but I really don’t think they’re smart enough to see the parallels. Or, maybe the do and Orwell was prophetic. Which, may be the case. For all the hand wringing and pseudo-sympathy for our earth, it is the desire to control other people behavior to runs the alarmism.

I find their effort can not be better defined by Orwell himself, I believe this was attempted…….“Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.”
—Part III, Chapter III, Nineteen Eighty-Four

    The abstract is here:

But for the full text, you gotta pay. This annoys me a bit always, but I suppose JGR has to pay the bills like everybody else.

  5. Leon Brozyna says:

…could triple the probability of cold winter extremes…

Yeah … and a hot babe could seduce me into spending the night with her …

  6. Sundance says:

Several solar physicists were way ahead of these guys on the projection for cooling. We may have to consider future vacations in Hansen’s hot Arctic.

  7. Great photo (even artistic)! Visually appealing, with a touch of absurdest fantasy appropriate to the topic.

  8. klem says:

So let me get this straight; global cooling is due to warming and warming is due to cooling, droughts are due to rain and rain is due to drought, day is due to night, windy weather is due to calm, fat is due to slender, chickens are due to pigs, shoes are due to hats, … there is no end to this. But this makes sense to environmentalists. Environmentalists are truly environ-mental.

  9. PhilW says:

They’re just covering all the bases

  10. John Endicott says:

And this is why AGW is unfalsifiable and thus not science:
If it’s warmer that’s consistent with AGW
If it’s colder that’s consistent with AGW
No matter what happens we are told it’s consistent with AGW.

    • Mike Davis says:

      John:
In normal science that in itself would automatically falsify AGW! Being not Falsifiable makes it false. With no unique characteristic there is no hypothesis.

The article can be found here:

Here there is a review of Arctic ice impact on atmospheric circulation which presents a much sober picture with high uncertainty:

Role of Arctic sea ice in global atmospheric circulation: A review
    http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/future/docs/ArcticAND_Globe.pdf

It would be interesting to check Wu, B., Ronghui, H., Dengyi, G., 1999. Effects of variation of winter sea- ice area in Kara and Barents seas on East Asia winter monsoon. Acta Meteorological Sinica 13, 141–153. (which is not quoted in the Postdam paper)

    Another article ,
Sorteberg, Asgeir, Børge Kvingedal, 2006: Atmospheric Forcing on the Barents Sea Winter Ice Extent. J. Climate, 19, 4772–4784.
    http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JCLI3885.1

indicates that it is the atmospheric circulation which forces the sea ice extent rather than the opposite.

  13. Patagon says:

The Postdam paper quotes Sorteberg and Kvingedal (2006):

Based on the observational data (e.g., [Sorteberg and Kvingedal, 2006]) the background lower-troposphere flow – the latter we attribute to the case of 100% SIC with 0~F and V_T~0 – is supposed to possess a close-to-zero vorticity.

However, this is what the observational data of Sorteberg and Kvingedal, 2006 says:

During sparse sea ice winters, the picture is reversed,
and a stronger east–west gradient in the MSLP
anomalies (Fig. 3) favors southerly geostrophic wind
anomalies over the southern Nordic Seas. This may
contribute to the increased inflow of warm, saline Atlantic
water into the Nordic Seas. Over the Barents Sea,
advection of warm and humid air, which disfavors
freezing, will contribute to a reduced sea ice extent by
dynamically pushing the sea ice northward and keeping
the thick ice (and therefore freshwater) confined to the
    area north of Greenland.

But who are the observational data to question the word of the models…

(Anyway, we still need data for Siberia and Northern Europe to question Postdam, if anyone has access to the Wu paper it would be interesting to know)

  14. Ted A says:

Hay!!! I had a propane refrigerater in my old camper that worked like that. The bigger the propane fire in it the colder it got.
But I doubt that the atmosphere works like that. If it did we would be in the midst of the next Ice Age right now.

  15. michael truman says:

As everyone knows fat people are caused by thin people and so this cold is caused by the hot weather its all a bit of a riddle but as the weather is not doing what it is told it should be doing we at the IPCC need to be imaginative and come up with new hypothesis about why the weather is not warming as we said. SO LOOK PEOPLE CAN YOU PLEASE STOP QUESTIONING US AND ACCEPT THAT GLOBAL WARMING IS HERE TO STAY AND UNLESS WE BURNING OIL AND DRIVING CARS THEN THE POLLAR BEAR WILL DIE AND EVERYONE WILL BE SAD.
