Holdren Ice Free Arctic Update

Green shows areas of gain since the same date in 2007. Red shows areas of less ice.

See if you can find the commercial shipping lanes.

Highways use yellow lines so obviously the entire yellow part of the Arctic ice is the shipping lanes. See how easy it all is when you use logic?

  2. AndyW says:

Steve, I can’t keep up with all your posts 😉

Hi. If you expect the shipping lanes of the Northwest Passage to be open in the second week of November, either you are trying to delude us or you are sadly misinformed.

In case you hadn’t noticed, we are 6 weeks from the winter solstice and the ice has been re-freezing since mid-September….

It is quite depressing when someone attempts to distort the facts in pursuit of their agenda, isn’t it?

    • So when do you think commercial ships are going through the MWP?

      • Mike Davis says:

It appears that COE is not a student of Arctic History during the last 10 thousand years.

      • Concerned occupant of Earth says:

        Hi Steven

        Hopefully never….

I am sure you know as well as I that it will happen when it becomes commercially feasible. The passage was made this summer, as you know. When has that happened?

Oh, and as for Arctic history – I suspect noboy knows for certain. Sure the Arctic has been ice free in the past – but with similar conditions (of Earth orbit etc)? I don’t think so.

Anyway, with ENSO entering a cooling phase and the sun relatively inactive I guess we will see a dramatic recovery now? If we do then I shall be pleasantly surprised. If we continue to see ice loss in the summer perhaps you will reconsider your position?

      • Mike Davis says:

There has been quite a bit if shipping in the Northeast Passage over the years with ships designed just for thst. The last few years allowed passage with the aide of ice breakers and better satellite observations to know where the holes were in the ice.
The statement was During the last 10 thousand years the is evidence the Arctic was ice free for long periods during summer.

    • Paul H says:

Nutjob Holdren is certainly expecting them to be open soon ( except during years ending in an odd number when we will have an ice age).

      Concerned occupant of Earth,

Please keep your concerns to yourself. Leave my money alone. Leave my food alone. Leave my clothes alone. Leave my lightbulbs alone. Leave my car alone. Leave my tv alone. Leave my job alone. Leave my children alone. Leave my world alone.

Stop acting like God. People don’t like other people acting like God over them.

  4. John Fisher says:

I think that the AGW tribe (like COE) do not appreciate your brand of gleeful sarcasm.
However, I do. Keep it up.

Hmmm… I do like COE’s statement: “It is quite depressing when someone attempts to distort the facts in pursuit their agenda.” We are, I assume, speaking about Michael
Mann, Joe Romm and their ilk?

  5. Johm Silver says:

    This is the interesting picture:

The deep purple is water ready to freeze. All of Novaja Semja will be frozen in, and you will be able to walk between Iceland and Greenland this winter.

he must mean holdren saying we are on the verge of ice free winters in the arctic

  7. John Edmondson says:

When was the last time sea ice linked Iceland and Greenland? It looks like there is ice off the NE coast of Iceland and the Sea is near it’s freezing point.

  8. peterhodges says:

last winter a polar bear ended up in scotland. probably trying to escape the cold.

they’ll have even less far to swim to get there this year

  9. Leon Brozyna says:

Even if the fantasies of an ice-free Arctic summer come to pass, all it proves is that ice melts.

    • Concerned occupant of Earth says:

Wow, what a thoughtful insight, thanks…

Everyone knows ice melts when temperatures rise above freezing. That is not the issue. You might want to stop and ask why the ice has been melting so QUICKLY. My understanding is that this is not natural. If the experts say it’s not natural then why is it happening?

  10. Tony Duncan says:

Smart of you Steve to compare THIS year with 2007, which was the lowest ice on record. That needs a better phrase than cherry picking to describe it!

    • Jon P says:

Never seen a plane in a “death spiral” gain altitude, have you?

    • Mike Davis says:

      TonyD:
He could have picked 1957 when the submarines surfaced at the North Pole on Christmas Day. He could have picked 1934 when written records claim there was less ice. He could have picked 1000AD when the Vikings sailed all around Greenland and drew maps of the land without ice on the shores. But instead he had to settle for 2007 which was the lowest ice extent since satellites were launched because of the minor technical problems the satellites were experiencing in the other years mentioned!
With 31 years of satellite data and most of that being during the warming phase of the current Arctic long term weather pattern that last up to 80 years we probably should for the natural cycle to play out before comparing this year with any other because we need to include the coming ice gain that is expected in the next portion of the cycle. After we have 3 full cycles for an average we will better understand the Arctic weather patterns n about 150 years or so.

It would be better to compare it to the Medieval Warm Period.

Highly entertaining comments. Sadly most of them need to be filed under ‘Fiction’ rather than ‘Fact’…

I especially like the comment that ice is water. Oh, and the polar bear near Scotland.

Dream on guys. The planet is warming and you don’t have an explanation that fits.

    • Mike Davis says:

      COE:
Natural long term weather patterns fit nicely thank you! Those have fit throughout the history of the earth and they continue to fit even today. During a period as recently as the MWP the Arctic was ice free for as many months as it was closed and the trees grew hundreds of miles further north than they can exist today. AGW is the fantasy. Warming and cooling each in their own time are expected under the natural patterns.
I think you need to sign up for the Darwin Award!

The planet is warming and you don’t have an explanation that fits.

Are you one of those Germans I read about at WUWT?

The explanation is it’s natural variation. Warming and cooling has always happened. You science is very poor if you didn’t know that.

      • Concerned occupant of Earth says:

Your knowledge is very poor if you think this is a natural rate of loss. Go and look at the charts – assuming you are able to interpret them through your pre-conceptions.

    • Martin C says:

      COE,
I agree with Mike. Changes in the PDO, AMO, and solar activity all may lead to cooling in the next 10 years or so (ref an article I believe I saw at Icecap.us, but can’t find right now).

I (and I think most of the people who post here) agree that the planet has been warming – for ‘natural’ reason, not the CO2 b.s. put up by Hansen, Gore, and the rest of the CAGW crowd. Maybe Chris D will chime in here and give you some support . . .

April is in spring, not winter.

i can’t smart ass my way out that one. at least i remembered the incident! if i recall, hopefully better than the date of that incident, arctic ice actually peaked april last spring

Huh? last i checked ice is water. at least the ice on the ocean.

i did post a link… here again is your polar bear in scotland:

    http://www.countrylife.co.uk/news/article/448935/Polar-bear-washes-up-on-Scotland-s-Isle-of-Mull.html

here’s the money quote for ya’:

“Scientists believe that the colder winter and lower-than-average sea temperatures this year may have allowed the ice floe to remain frozen longer than usual, assisting the polar bear’s passage.”

    • Mike Davis says:

      Peter:
There is DRY ice composed of very cold CO2. At -56.4C I believe it takes a bit more cooling to form that than what one could call normal ice which is composed of DiHydrogen Monoxide which is one of the most hazardous chemicals in the world. Care must be taken with this compound because breathing it leads to death and it is found it most hazardous materials. It is so bad that EPA regulates the disposal of this compound. In great amounts it destroys cities. In its frozen state people can walk on it and vehicle drive on it. Rather than demeaning ice by claiming it is meer water we should show respect for this amazing compound and give it its rightful name Solid Dyhydrogen Monoxide

      I suppose one swallow makes a summer…..

  14. peterhodges says:

    ummm…..

now that i have reread the article i notice that pictures show different rock arrangements. and the date is1 april.

    so sorry.
