What Is The Primary Mission Of NASA?

NASA was created in 1958, after the Soviets launched the world’s first satellite. The idea was to make the US #1 in space and aeronautical science, and keep the US from falling further behind the Russians.

You may note that there is no clause about saving the world from global warming, adjusting past temperature data, or improving relations with the Islamic world.

(c) The aeronautical and space activities of the United States shall be conducted so as to contribute materially to one or more of the following objectives:

(1) The expansion of human knowledge of phenomena in the atmosphere and space;

(2) The improvement of the usefulness, performance, speed, safety, and efficiency of aeronautical and space vehicles;

(3) The development and operation of vehicles capable of carrying instruments, equipment, supplies and living organisms through space;

(4) The establishment of long-range studies of the potential benefits to be gained from, the opportunities for, and the problems involved in the utilization of aeronautical and space activities for peaceful and scientific purposes.

(5) The preservation of the role of the United States as a leader in aeronautical and space science and technology and in the application thereof to the conduct of peaceful activities within and outside the atmosphere.

(6) The making available to agencies directly concerned with national defenses of discoveries that have military value or significance, and the furnishing by such agencies, to the civilian agency established to direct and control nonmilitary aeronautical and space activities, of information as to discoveries which have value or significance to that agency;

(7) Cooperation by the United States with other nations and groups of nations in work done pursuant to this Act and in the peaceful application of the results, thereof; and

(8) The most effective utilization of the scientific and engineering resources of the United States, with close cooperation among all interested agencies of the United States in order to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort, facilities, and equipment.

    They are annoying me, I used to respect NASA, now it just stupid posts, money is wasted on voodoo science with no relevance. It’s a toothless exploration body now that just tries to prove pseudoscience

    eg

    Why don’t they go to Mars/Moon and keep exploring the planets???

  2. Matt says:

    Did you actually read the charter you posted?

    You may note that there is no clause about saving the world from global warming
    (1) The expansion of human knowledge of phenomena in the atmosphere

    or improving relations with the Islamic world.
    (7) Cooperation by the United States with other nations and groups of nations in work done pursuant to this Act and in the peaceful application of the results, thereof;

      They are just stuffing around. Helium 3 is on the moon and looks like China is ahead of the race to get it.

      If you got the Helium 3, you could actually reduce fossil fuels, but no that would be too clever for Obama.

    • Paul H says:

      “(1) The expansion of human knowledge of phenomena in the atmosphere ”

      Does not say anything about measuring surface temperatures.

      “(7) Cooperation by the United States with other nations and groups of nations in work done pursuant to this Act”

      I would suggest “pursuant to this act” are the crucial words here.

      • Matt says:

        To understand the atmosphere, I would imagine that it would be important to have some knowledge of surface temperatures.

        And as far as I know, NASA doesn’t exactly measure surface temperatures, they just use those that others have measured.

    “What Is The Primary Mission Of NASA?”

    Let me guess; Is it to build faster computers than anyone else even though they don’t actually build computers?

  4. Mike Davis says:

    Off the top without research I see 6 government agencies that are redundant doing the same work. This is a waste of money and NASA should be trimmed back to its original charter.

  5. Paul H says:

    Unfortunately most Govt agencies + depts like to accumulate far more power than they are given at the outset.

  6. I didn’t know the Russians were ahead of us in relations with Muslims.
