Withholding Evidence

The people prosecuting the case for global warming are withholding evidence.

They know that temperatures are rising much slower than they forecast – “where the heck is global warming.” Hansen knows that the highway outside his office isn’t underwater.

They know that Antarctic sea ice is growing. They know that winters have seen a dramatic decline in temperature over the last decade. They know that sea level is barely rising, if at all. They know that the last decade has seen record winter snowfall. They know that there has not been an increase in hurricanes or tornadoes. They know that the hottest/driest years were in the 1930s. They know that sea level has been rising and glaciers melting for thousands of years.

Empirical evidence does not lend much support to the notion that climate is headed precipitately toward more extreme heat and drought. The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.

-James Hansen

The logic being used is that the disasters will happen later in a non-linear fashion, so it is OK to be less than forthcoming now. That way of thinking is both unethical and foolish. At what point do they admit to themselves that they were wrong? Will a harsh La Niña winter do the trick?

Here in Fort Collins we just recalled two former prosecutors (now judges) who withheld evidence in a murder case which sent an innocent teenager to jail for a decade. They were sure he was guilty.

In the case of global warming, the jury (the citizenry of the world) will make the right choice. We don’t need a bunch of arrogant academics making decisions about what information we deserve to hear. If they don’t release the information, there is an army of volunteer bloggers who will. They are fighting a battle against the public which they can not and will not win.

  1. Glen Shevlin says:

Science abhors a vacuum and unless people fill that void with real information it will be filled with what ever is handy. In this case questionable facts

  2. suyts says:

Heh, the alarmists are right at the point where Nixon first publicly refused to cooperate!

  3. Geezer1 says:

It is kinda nice to see the daggers being slowly driven into the hearts of those who promote the AGW theory. When the truthful real data is able to reach the public the scam will be up. Long live the climate skeptics!!!!!

  4. Amino Acids in Meteorites says:

Some will continue to believe in global warming even if they saw this happen:

  5. Tom Black says:

If AGW was on trial for crimes against humanity and the IPCC and the CRU were
witnesses for the prosecution, the defense lawyer would quickly discredit their testimony

  6. Tony Duncan says:

then it is a conspiracy and the climate scientists that break ranks will be lauded as hero’s and have WAY more fame and money than sticking with a doomed fraud. Who is going to be the one to let the world in on the fraud. They must all be sweating bullets now. Looking nervously at each other, sniping, and demanding loyalty; blaming each other for getting them into this mess and preparing their memoirs to show that it was the OTHERS that made them do it!

    • TinyCO2 says:

Did that happen with communism? Geocentricsm? If CO2 catastrophe theory is wrong it will be allowed to fade away, it won’t collapse with a bang. Sadly.

Why would there be loads of money to be made for scientists who break away? Until the theories are dead, they’re just swimming against the tide. There aren’t huge grants from Oil companies AFAIK, at least not for anyone outside political influence. Once the game is up they still wouldn’t be popular. Nobody likes to be reminded they were wrongand there are a lot of people with their reputations tied to AGW. Where will the money be when climate science isn’t important any more?

  7. Tony Duncan says:

Are you kidding? the media attention would be phenomenal. Remember this is the BIGGEST hoax in the history of science. no way it can fade away. When it goes, it will crash BIG time! No prisoners taken. We are talking Lysenko here in the USA!
How much do you think Hansen would get from Fox to be a commentator? Or Trenbeth? and man oh man if MANN turned on his co conspirators, he would be a rock star. Remmber this is a religion, a cult AND the biggest political focus any scientific endeavor has ever had. The first one to turn will be a ROCK STAR!

  8. GolfCharley says:

    @Tony Duncan
Do you not think that Mann et al currently consider themselves to have celebrity status?

They have got away with saying almost anything for 10+ years, with world leaders and the gullible public lapping up every word they speak.

Manns recent assault on OpEds is a classic case of someone thinking they can stop their imminent fall from grace. All it will acheive is making the final fall even more spectacular.

Mann will never admit his wrong doing. He is a true denier of the truth.

    • Mike Davis says:

You also need to consider the media in this. The Media does not want to admit they have been wrong fr all these years. Just like the New York Times and some others. They will just continue reducing their pool of environmental journalists until all the MSM alarmists are unemployed. Also Just as now they will start accepting Op-ed pieces from the Climatologists that put the group in a bad light such as the recent ranting of Mann. The more publicity Mann receives the worse he looks.

    • Tony Duncan says:

      Mike,
that just supports my point. When the first real climate scientist finally bows to the inevitable and publicly displays his heresy, Mann, the true believer will know the whole fraud that he was so instrumental in perpetrating will come tumbling down. He and a group of henchmen (probably radical muslim climate alarmists) will attempt to storm Fox news and assassinate the apostate.
All the news media will eat it up. The traitor will need armed guards at all times
and we will have the trial of the millenium, with Gore and Soros finally taken away in chains after their sobbing admissions of guilt (they are bullies and cowards so will have no dignity and beg for forgiveness).
there will be a final standoff in few climate change centers like Penn State, NASA, and East Anglia, and it will make the Koresh thing look like a game of patty cake.

      • Anyone who “displays their heresy” gets excommunicated. The fact that you are unaware of Judith Curry, Richard Lindzen, Bill Gray and dozens of others highlights the problem.

      • Mike Davis says:

I think one of your comrades already did that at the Discovery Channel for not being extremist enough.
When the real climate scientists make statements about doubts they are ignored by the MSM. Their detractor are given front page to defend the tribe against the Guerrilla warfare being waged by the realists.

      • Tony Duncan says:

Mike, that is not fair, you have to tell me who it was, so I can look up what really happened. now you are just being mean

  9. Tony Duncan says:

I am quite aware of Curry and Lindzen, and I have written extensively about them. Do not know Gray or the dozens of others.
When did MIT fire Lindzen or climate journals refuse to publish his papers? I think I would have heard of that. And is Judith Curry unable to publish either? Both are part of a debate about this issue and both have their views discussed. I just checked and her posts are still on realclimate.
