But There Isn’t Any Cold In The Arctic …..

ALBANY, N.Y. — Albany-to-New York City rail service is scheduled to return to normal Tuesday after being suspended because of the arctic cold.

Amtrak shut down its Empire Service between New York City and Albany as a precaution Monday because some signals and switches were frozen. The Ethan Allen Express to Rutland, Vt., was also canceled. Trains to Montreal, Chicago and Toronto operated normally.

The Ethan Allen will run between Albany and New York City Tuesday, with buses carrying passengers between Albany and Rutland. And passengers on the route from Niagara Falls to New York should check for a schedule change involving one train.

The National Weather Service said early morning low temperatures reached double digits below zero across much of upstate New York.

my iPhone had -22F at 8:30 this morning. The thermometer outside my window didn’t go below about -5°F but I assume that was because of the heat runoff from my house

Tony, I used to use one of those too. I ended up getting one of the remote sensors outside with the receiving unit in the house. Big difference.

Windows are poor insulation. Lots of heat loss. Double pane saves you money in winter. Triple pane in cold areas even better. And two sets of triple pane more so. People think it’s stupid to install two sets of triple pane where it’s gets below zero in winter. But in the long run it pays for itself, and then some. In other words you make money by installing them. And you are more comfortable in the house.

Micro climate also known as UHI. It is not uncommon for me to see a difference between my monitor and that at the Airport 30 miles away and my wife uses Weather Bug which is another story entirely. With the right weather conditions I experience the same temperatures as the Airport except during extreme weather events.

As global warmer gets worse we can expect to find many more things frozen.

  4. suyts says:

Gravity is pulling all the cold down!!!

    • Mike Davis says:

I thought we were experiencing a weakening of gravitational forces which was allowing the heat to rise faster in the winter!

  5. Brad says:

I think what is being experienced here the inevitable coldwarm. Very soon coldwarm will return to the Arctic. (I love that word.)

  6. Michael says:

By Jove! You’re right. Someone pulled the plug and all the arcticcold drained out to the lower 48.
