Nope, I’m pretty sure it was hate speech that motivated Loughner, ………

Representative William Clay of Missouri, recalling George W. Bush’s talk of outreach to black Americans, said that picking Ashcroft resembled “the way that Ku Klux Klan members worked to improve race relations: They, too, reached out to blacks with nooses and burning crosses.”

Chris Matthews, when he likened Republicans quoting John F. Kennedy on tax cuts to “the Nazi Party quoting Kennedy saying, ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’?”

Al Sharpton, who said during the post-election ballot fight in Florida that conservatives wanted to “do the same thing to us” that “Hitler in his wickedness and evil” did to the Jews.

The several members of the Hawaii ACLU board of directors who publicly objected to inviting Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to take part in a debate on the grounds that he is “an Antichrist,” “a Hitler” — or “if not Hitler, he is a Goebbels” — and an “a–hole,” and that allowing him to speak would be “like having a serial murderer debate the value of life.”

Scarborough: If someone on this panel said that they wished that Dick Cheney had been blown up, and you didn’t say…
    Frank: I think he did.
    Scarborough: Okay. Did you say…
Maher: No, no. I quoted that.
    Frank: You don’t believe that?
Maher: I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact.

National Public Radio legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg:
[I]f there is retributive justice [Sen. Jesse Helms] will get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it.

Washington Post syndicated columnist Richard Cohen:
“For hypocrisy, for sheer gall, [Newt] Gingrich should be hanged.”

Comedian and (former) talk show host Craig Kilborn [Caption under footage of George W. Bush]:
    “Snipers Wanted”

Actor Alec Baldwin on Conan O’Brien:
“[I]f we were in other countries, we would all right now, all of us together, all of us together would go down to Washington and we would stone Henry Hyde to death! We would stone him to death! [crowd cheers] Wait! Shut up! Shut up! No shut up! I’m not finished. We would stone Henry Hyde to death and we would go to their homes and we’d kill their wives and their children. We would kill their families.”

Director Spike Lee on Charlton Heston:
“Shoot him with a .44 caliber Bulldog.”

Augustin Cebada (Head of the Brown Berets, a Hispanic activist organization at a July 4, 1996 rally) “Go back to Simi Valley, you skunks! Go back to Woodland Hills! Go back to Boston! Go back to Plymouth Rock, Pilgrims! Get out! We are the future. You are old and tired. Go on. We have beaten you. Leave like beaten rats. You old white people, it is your duty to die …” [Quoted in Barbara Coe, Reconquista, The Takeover of America, California Coalition for Immigration Reform, 1998, p. 20.]

Willie Brown (Mayor of San Francisco to a white parent complaining that affirmative action would penalize his children) “I don’t care about your idiot children.” [The Social Contract, Summer 1998, p. 290.]

Keith Halloran, a New Hampshire Democratic candidate, said on a Facebook thread that he wished Palin had been aboard the Alaska plane that crashed, killing five including Sen. Ted Stevens.

Another New Hampshire Democrat, Timothy Horrigan resigned from the state legislature after writing this gem on Facebook: “Well a dead Palin wd be even more dangerous than a live one . . . she is all about her myth & if she was dead she cldn’t commit any more gaffes.”

Foul-mouthed comedian Sandra Bernhard warned Palin she would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” if she tried coming to New York.

During his 2008 campaign he said in June, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” and in September, “I want you to go out and talk to your neighbors. . . . I want you to argue with them, get in their faces.” He kept it up during the recent midterm election with this comment: “If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, ‘We’re gonna punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends . . . .”

Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy said that after the health care vote he wanted to spit on and assault Tea Party members: “I know how the ‘tea party’ people feel, the anger, venom and bile that many of them showed during the recent House vote on health care reform. I know because I want to spit on them, take one of their ‘Obama Plan White Slavery’ signs and knock every racist and homophobic tooth out of their Cro-Magnon heads.”

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman was first out of the box connecting the Arizona shooting to Right-wing speech that created a climate of hate, intoning, “the purveyors of hate have been treated with respect, even deference, by the GOP establishment.” He must have forgotten his own words in December 2009 during the health care debate when he wrote, “A message to progressives: By all means, hang Senator Joe Lieberman in effigy.”

Village Voice: Michael Feingold, while reviewing the play “King Cowboy Rufus Rules the Universe,” wrote: “Republicans don’t believe in the imagination, partly because so few of them have one, but mostly because it gets in the way of their chosen work, which is to destroy the human race and the planet. Human beings, who have imaginations, can see a recipe for disaster in the making; Republicans, whose goal in life is to profit from disaster and who don’t give a hoot about human beings, either can’t or won’t. Which is why I personally think they should be exterminated before they cause any more harm.”

  2. suyts says:

No, really, this is what they believe! It is the left that incites to violence.

“Hatred as the central element of our struggle! Hatred that is intransigent…hatred so violent that it propels a human being beyond his natural limitations, making him violent and cold-blooded killing machine…We reject any peaceful approach. Violence is inevitable. To establish Socialism rivers of blood must flow! The imperialist enemy must feel like a hunted animal wherever he moves. Thus we’ll destroy him! These hyenas are fit only for extermination. We must keep our hatred alive and fan it to paroxysm! The victory of Socialism is well worth millions of atomic victims! ” ——Ernesto “Che” Guevara

  3. Latitude says:

Acting outraged against hate-speak, while using hate-speak.

    They’re not fooling anyone with 1/2 a brain….

  4. BioBob says:

What you all are watching is a paroxysm of angst as the left realizes it has lost control not only the public narrative but also control of political system. This thrashing will continue it’s turn toward cannibalism as the ideologically intolerant left wing completes the cleansing of the moderates in the Democratic party to its logical conclusion.

Thereafter, we need not be overly concerned about the left; they will have dug their own political grave with support from a increasingly tiny but strident portion of the electorate.

Like all extremist, they will eventually be relegated to the dustbin of history, having been rejected by the mainstream majority as mentally defective ideologues.

    Be of good cheer !

    • Latitude says:

Bob, I think what we are watching is just more of the left trying to silence free speech.
They have been trying to regulate the internet (Obama), shut down talk radio, conservatives, etc.
They complain about talk radio, when all the left has to do is produce their own talk radio shows that are good enough for people to want to listen to…
..they tried that over and over, failed every time

I’m all for shutting up Palin, just as soon as the left shuts up Pelosi, Clinton, Boxer, and on and on and on……………….

      • BioBob says:

It really does not matter what the intent of leftist extreme is. ALL of it’s current actions are simple thrashing similar to those of a dying animal that will result in much ado about nothing with zero results except perhaps to make other feel disgust or pity.

ATM, less than 30% of the US population supports their agenda in any part and their recent activities simply alienate the population further.

Like I said, they are doomed and can be safely ignored – but crap on them if you like.

      • PhilJourdan says:

I’m all for shutting up Palin, just as soon as the left shuts up Pelosi, Clinton, Boxer, and on and on and on……………….

While I can’t stand to hear Pelosi, Hillary, Boxer, et. al. screech at me, I hope no one ever shuts any of them up. I choose not to listen to their screeds, but they have the right to screech all they want. And it should stay that way.

This was an apolitical tragedy that was only made political by small minded people.

  5. Andy Weiss says:

This incident had nothing to do with politics. It had to do with a deranged individual. Same can be said of most senseless killings.

  6. James Mayeau says:

Day before yesterday, our congresswoman, a creature that has never appeared for a debate, interview, or public speaking engagement, unless it was a highly scripted, SEIU and staff only type event, a lady who inherited her gerrymandered district from a dead husband whose last campaign was run without mention of his invariably fatal debilitating illness, she spoke on radio talk show without a script.

I call that refreshing the tree of democracy with the blood of patriots. And if it takes the blood of a few innocences to frighten these sort of politicians out of their hidy holes – I say that is a reflexion of the magnitude of their crimes in office.
