Nunavut Has A Fever

Nunavut is suffering from a frightening -34F (-37C) fever. But most of the rest of the planet has a chill.

  1. Andy Weiss says:

That type of map projection makes Nunavet look much bigger than it is.

  2. Dave N says:

Apparently so does northern-most Russia and the Kara Sea. I’m wondering where the stations are up there and how many of them there are.

  3. Anything is possible says:

The Mercator projection exaggerates areas far from the equator. For example:
Greenland takes as much area on the map as Africa, when in fact Africa’s area is approximately 14 times greater than Greenland.
Alaska takes as much area on the map as Brazil, when Brazil’s area is actually more than 5 times that of Alaska.
Finland appears with a greater north-south extent than India, although India’s is greater.
Antarctica appears as the biggest continent, although it is actually the 5th in terms of area.

This is why Jim gets so excited about polar warming. It gives him the opportunity to run amok with his red crayon.

Finally, we found the MET’s BBQ summer….
..it’s been hiding in that little bottom corner of Greenland

Of course, it’s the dead of winter, winter solstice, and it’s freezing cold up there!

    • Mike Davis says:

Do not tell me that because my travel agent showed me the map with all the red and booked me a really nice place on the beach for this week end for a bit of snorkeling and surfing.
They say the girls wear interesting swim suits. They also said if I hurry I can buy a life time vacation week there because they only expect it to get better with all the warming that is expected!
They claim there are a limited number of spots available so if you are interested I will give you the contact information!

  5. Scott says:

I wonder what the map would look like if it was plotted with best estimates of energy anomaly instead of temps. Because the highest temp anomalies are in areas with lower heat capacities (lower heat capacities are at lower temps).

    • Paul H says:

Is this to do with kinetic energy, Scott?

I saw an interesting piece from Joe Bastardi showing that the amount of kinetic energy involved in a rise from say 30C to 31C is far greater than a rise of 1C at lower temps. His point was that you cannot just average temperatures across the globe. So an increase in temps from say -20C to -10C in Greenland is insignificant compared even to a much smaller drop in tropical temps over a similar area.
