Anne, I think AAM may be on to something. While your theories are valid, I think cyclic climatic behaviors may play a part. AAM’s colddry obviously causes warming, but the warmwet, may cause cooling. When in transition, colddry intermingles with warmwet to spawn warmcold, and thus, drywet. But, only because dry and wet were left out in the cold………………or warm. Which ever the case may be.
Clearly, more funding is necessary for further study.

Here’s a video took on February 03, 2011 (that’s yesterday) of the 345ft deep waters where the blackwater Rio Negro meets the chocolate colored Amazon some 1600 kms (1000 miles) upstream from the Atlantic.
If you search hard enough you can view live web cameras of these areas, Including the ones of the north pole which I view regularly,
when these people write an article like that, Don’t they stop to think that someone might check?

Brings back wonderful memories from the 70s….
Very alarmist spin based upon the AGW belief system… but as the article notes there is a cycle of droughts that hit the Amazon… nothing new here… the droughts were not highly unusual… back in April 1977 the water levels in the Rio Branco and Rio Negro were very low…. too low even for small boats… so I had to travel overland from Boa Vista to Manaus. It was an interesting trip on a new dirt road through the jungle… the army checkpoints would only let you through in convoys of five or six vehicles during daylight hours because the road was not very popular locally… which is OK unless you happen to be in the sixth vehicle, in the last convoy of the day, and you break down… so it was a very long night in jungle with some very tense people waiting to hitch a lift with the first convoy next day…

Just checked recent satellite photos of South America and it looks pretty green to me-not the dying forest we are led to believe. Not that I really had to check though.
It seems highly unlikely trees would start dropping in their millions just because of a few weeks drought.
The Amazon basin in any event has most of its rain during the wet season and very little in the dry season so trees adapt to such variability naturally.
It is believed that the rainforest formed during the Eocene era, from 34 to 56 million years ago. At this time, the Atlantic ocean gave rise to a warm, moist region, although this was closer to a savanna-type region than today’s climate.
The rain forest has been around for millions of years and has survived much greater climate shifts without much changing :-

I wonder were they actually in the amazon when they supposedly wrote this garbage(spoken with a french accent). Were are the pictures, i figure they would take some to say see we told you, but alas NO. Just believe us we know what we are talking about, no need to look for yourself. They PREDICT a CO2 output, do they have a CO2 monitoring station there to verify, I guess not, believe what we tell you we know what we are doing, no need to check for yourself. Garbage like this makes me wonder sometimes why bother, but if we dont they would have thier way and ruin this world worse than they already have!
