February 12, 1899 – Record Cold In New York

Well, I just read congressional testimony that said extreme weather events are cause by CO2. And warming. And republicans. And bad guys. And polar bear haters.
And, I like polar bears. Alot!!
It wasn’t hot enough then to be cold.
lol, oh man, mind blowing! If it wasn’t generally hot then -10 wouldn’t be as cold as -10 is today. Today, -10 is way colder than -10 back then! Now I’m starting to see where Hansen is going with all of this……….dooohhuuuooood!
Not so sure about that … the 1890s was a decade of extreme warmcold:
1890 – June
“GREAT HEAT IN AMERICA HUNDREDS OF DEATHS FROM SUNSTROKE.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/44052819?
1891 – June
“INTENSE HEAT IN NEW YORK.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/39571687?
1892 – July
“HEAT IN AMERICA. DEATHS FROM SUNSTROKE. WORK SUSPENDED.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/48537955?
1893 – England and Europe
1894 – Sept
“DESTRUCTIVE FOREST FIRES IN AMERICA. GREAT LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/3587788?
1895 – Sept
“PHENOMENAL HEAT IN AMERICA.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/34523625?
1896 – Aug
“INTENSE HEAT IN AMERICA. APPALLING DEATH-ROLL.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/9379575?
1897 – July
“HEAT IN AMERICA. THOUSANDS PROSTRATED. NUMEROUS DEATHS.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/9174702?
1898 – Sept
“HEAT IN NEW YORK. 170 DEATHS ON MONDAY.”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/9850822?
There is a matching “extreme cold” headline for each of the corresponding winters as well.
That 1899 cold spell might have been the most severe/most widespread in American history, for example 0 (F) cold accompanied by snow in Augusta, GA, heavy snow in DC accompanied by single digit temps and winds up to 50 mph that left 15 foot snow drifts.
It must have been so hot in the world to make cold like this happen.

Go figure!
A few months later we see this:
“INTENSE HEAT.
The heat wave, which during June laid people in New York and other parts of America prostrate, now prevails in England.”
-July 1899
