How is giving half back in income tax cuts and welfare payments supposed to reduce emissions and/or stimulate investment in renewables? If anything, it’ll equalize people’s spending on energy since they may be able to afford the inevitable increases in energy costs as a result of the tax.
If the government was so sure about AGW, it would stop spending so much on trying to convince the public of the problem, and pour that money into renewables investment and/or research. Right now there aren’t any economically viable vote-friendly renewables solutions, so it’s just a money shuffling game to make it appear the government is doing something.
The half who will pay the tax are in a position to keep emitting regardless of the increases in prices. They certainly are not going to give up their Mercs Beemers and overseas flights. So no gains in emissions there.
The bottom half, assuming they will be fully compensated (dream on) will have the same buying power as before the tax, so no gains in emissions there.
Yep, that’s one sure smart govt we got here in Oz.
This will not happen. This govt. is too incompetent to be able to make such economic change.
Even if they get the tax through parliament because of support from Greens and Indies, they will be thrown out at the next election in 2013.

the other half will be spent on administration costs and banking fees, what’s not to like about it …(sarc)

No way! It really works! Pay people for not being productive! That’s the answer! Cuts down on everything!
These fools need to be dropped into Japan’s flood zone for a few months to experience a zero carbon footprint first hand.
No, I take that back. The Japanese would probably help them. Maybe the North shore of Baffin Bay?
