Cool. Sea ice is now part of the tundra!
NASA explains how these cracks form.
Lots of people think of the Arctic as just a flat expanse of white. This couldn’t be further from the truth. There are all sorts of cracks (leads) and mountains (ridges), similar to tectonic plates. The ice below is constantly moving via the winds and currents, and those forces acting on each piece of ice makes for a very dramatic seascape.
Who encouraged the press to be so completely disinformed on this subject? Looking through older newspapers, the coverage of the Arctic tended to be much better informed 100 years ago.
I somehow doubt he would have been allowed to go in the first place is there had been even a one in a million chance of anything going wrong.

It says he “trapped in the icy tundra”. So he is on solid ground then?
The writer does not know the difference between land ice and sea ice so all ice areas are “Tundra” It is a “Swell” sounding word! Kind of rolls of your tongue! 😉
