In December (on a tip from Scarlet Pumpernickel) I pointed out that the Maldives government doesn’t actually believe their sea level propaganda, rather they just use it to generate publicity and revenue.
How do I know? – They are building a new airport right next to the water.
The article was originally located at this link :
http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/news/1601/exclusive_designs_for_new_airport_unveiled
but it has disappeared. I wonder why?
[UPDATE – the link has been moved to http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/details/Local+News/exclusive-designs-for-new-airport-unveiled ]
At the original link, if you go to the search box and type in “new airport”, these come up:
http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/details/Local+News/new-airport-plans-take-off
and …
http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/details/Local+News/exclusive-designs-for-new-airport-unveiled
Note the following from the second link:
“Currently, Malé International Airport is the main international access point into the Maldives. It is located on Hulhulé Island in the North Malé Atoll, next to the capital city island. The airport first opened for business on 13 April, 1966, and resides at an elevation of 2m above sea level”
If Hansen is right, the new airport should open just as the other one disappears into the sea 🙂
Here it is. And simulated pics of soon-to-be-drowning passengers and walkways.
Comment with two links, stuck in moderation
Yeah Steven what’s with the two link moderation hell zone? Maybe let us have three before consigning us to moderation hell? Please. Pretty please.
Spammers 😉
Yeah… the lame excuse. Actually WordPress does an ok job at catching spammers… so it’s not a real excuse. [;)]
That’s why I have now resorted to 1 link after the other. 😉 I only post more when I want Steve to take a note.
A search for “airport” here http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/search/
turns up this article
http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/details/Local+News/exclusive-designs-for-new-airport-unveiled
http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/details/Local+News/exclusive-designs-for-new-airport-unveiled
http://www.maldivestraveller.mv/details/Industry+news/mal%C3%A9-international-airport-handed-over-for-us511-million-upgrade
I missed that one!
Actually the search turned up LOTS of articles on the site about the airport. I decided not to post them all here since there are too many… you can simply search for “airport” on the site… Obviously it’s one of the major news items for the Maldives.
The main problem with that island nation is the destruction of the environment by doing all their construction projects and promoting tourism.
By allowing the destruction of these island nations the UN provides evidence it is not interested in the environmental problems the world faces.
Holding an environmental conference in Cancun, which should be another poster child for environmental destruction also shows the lack of environmental awareness being displayed. The Enviro Whacko groups should have boycotted the meeting but they also are not really interested in environmental issues.
Airport?
It appears to be a scam by the promoters and little more than an advertising vehicle for those countries that participate.
