Prior to the filling of Lake Powell, Glen Canyon was considered by some to be the most beautiful section of the Grand Canyon system. Photographer Eliot Porter published a nice photo essay of the canyon before it was flooded.

Water flowing into the Grand Canyon is now clear and cold, because it comes out of the bottom of Glen Canyon Dam. Prior to the filling of the lake, the water was warm and full of silt. Lee’s Ferry, below the dam, now has some of the largest trout in the world because of the cold clear water. No bait allowed.
“Before Glen Canyon Dam was built, the Colorado River was so full of silt that only suckers, bonytails, and chubs could survive in its murky waters.”
