Trenberth Blames Weather On Global Warming

Below normal sea surface temperatures and air temperatures are a definitive sign of global warming.

Record-setting weather events — vast floods along the Mississippi River and shockingly destructive tornadoes in the South — have dominated the news in the U.S. for the past several weeks. Up to now, climate scientists have always been careful to say that no particular weather event can be linked directly to climate change. But many climate experts are now pointing linking climate change directly to some of these weather-related disasters.

Kevin Trenberth is head of the Climate Analysis Section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. funded by the National Science Foundation. In an April interview, Trenberth said he believes that it is “irresponsible not to mention climate change” in the context of extreme weather event – and added that the scientific community is still trying to understand how polluting our atmosphere with billions of tons of greenhouse gases affects tornadic activity.

One of his predecessors at NCAR blamed bad weather during the 1970s on global cooling.

..or it could be that weather events like that happen without any human influence.. like they did well before any AGW scare, or ice age scare, for that matter..

  2. Lance says:

    Pick a decade, pick cooling, pick warming…nothing new…move along….
oh but it is “unprecedented”, “catastrophic”,1 in a hundred years, …

    need i say more.

  3. suyts says:

lol, well, we had our very own, albeit a bit sensitive, climatologist tell us, apparently paraphrasing…….‘….a background of climate change had an impact on every rainstorm, heat wave or cold snap.

So there it is. It rained climate change on me today!

  4. Mike Davis says:

The term Climate Change is redundant. Climate is Change. Climate is extremes in temperature. Climate is extremes in precipitation. Climate is extremes in air flow.
Long term regional weather patterns define climate. Climate does not define the weather patterns.
As with many “Climatologists” they get it backwards. Every rainstorm, heat wave and cold snap has an impact on regional climate.
It is a “Travesty” that Climatologists do not understand weather!

  5. Andy Weiss says:

    Lance,

What about the word “exceptional”? That is the new Weather Channel code word. Maybe you don’t get TWC in Canada.

The Weather Channel had a feature last night on the 1927 Mississippi River flood. At it’s maximum, the area of flooding was over 60 miles wide. Hundreds dead, close to a million people homeless. That was truly “exceptional”!

    • Daniel Packman says:

The pre-levee flooding naturally spread over a much wider area. Without levees, the current event would be wider and not nearly as high.

      • Mike Davis says:

Without the levees and development in the region the river basin would continue to build by soil deposition and the river would continue to change course. The current flood problems are due to attempts to Control the river to protect those that wanted to live along the river. If you live in a floodplain you should expect to be flooded.

  6. Latitude says:

“the length of the growing season today is two weeks shorter”
    BECAUSE OF GLOBAL COOLING

The only problem with that is that they use that exact same time frame to justify global warming……
    …by starting in the 1970’s

Birds are migrating two weeks sooner, growing seasons are two weeks sooner, butterflies are migrating two weeks sooner, growing zones are moving up two weeks sooner…..and on and on

All because they start counting in the 70’s……………..

  7. Andy Weiss says:

The Weather Channel said that there were levees in 1927, but they didn’t hold.

  8. Jimbo says:

They told us not to use weather events as a sign climate no this is what they have been reduced to. Utter desperation in my opinion.
