Why Is GISS Diverging From HadCRUT?

http://www.woodfortrees.org/

Over the past decade, GISS has continued to show an increase in global temperatures, while HadCRUT has decreased. They have been diverging at a rate of about 1C per century, which is pretty dramatic considering that they report 0.01C precision.

Hansen wrote this last year, in a paper which has since been removed from the GISS web site.

“A likely explanation for discrepancy in identification of the warmest year is the fact that the HadCRUT analysis excludes much of the Arctic ….. (whereas GISS) estimates temperature anomalies throughout most of the Arctic.

The image below shows in pink areas where GISS is estimating temperature anomalies in the Arctic.

Hansen is making up numbers for 2/3 of the Arctic (using a few likely UHI affected thermometers as the basis) and reporting precision within 0.01C.  His very large Arctic anomalies massively skew his global anomaly upwards.

This isn’t science, it is closer to witchcraft.

Don’t insult Jim’s witchcraft or he”ll turn you into a Newt.

Does one really think that an activist, known for being prepared to go to jail for his beliefs, known to fly the Atlantic to give ‘expert’ witness in a foreign court exculpating law-breakers, and well known for his intemperate language, would EVER, under WHATEVER circumstances – don’t even THINK IT – give instructions to his staff (all rappers, are they?) to – what’s the word? – adjust the figures?

  3. ThinkingHeretic says:

    Perish the thought!

To compare this to witchcraft is insulting. To the witches.

Their product is called gistemp, I say we rename it guesstemp. 🙂

I think James Hansen knows full well what he’s doing and that it is wrong.

GISS was actually similar to HadCRUT until around 1998. You can see changes starting around 1998. The differences between 1988 and 1998 are not noticeable to people not experienced with graphs.

Here are 2 videos about how GISS changes, and diverts from the other big 3 temp sets.
