Global Warming: It’s Fat People’s Fault

If the mail I get from readers is any indication, the issue of climate change is a dastardly conspiracy to “redistribute global wealth,” as one memorably explained to me. Now greenhouse deniers can imagine another conspiracy: it is all a plot to get rid of fat people.

The link between obesity and climate change has come up before, although subtly. An AP story last year noted that people could combat both of these problems by walking or bicycling rather than driving (so they burn calories, not gasoline). And writing in the Huffington Post, filmmaker Bryan Young (“Killer at Large”) cited a scientist who told him that “for every pound the average American is overweight, we use an additional 938 million gallons of gasoline per year.

  1. Latitude says:

thank God we grow all of our food organically…………………………

    …..and use no petroleum products

  2. Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

Now that is some powerful $hit they are taking! Totally overboard MANN!

  3. Justa Joe says:

Well if Bryan Young said that a guy told him so then it must be true.

If one reads this this garbage as written it takes 938 million gallons of gasoline to transport a pound of mass for an indefinite distance within a year. It’s amazing the trucking industry can even exist.

This article is a libtard trifecta they get to presume that there is AGW, bash Americans, and call Americans fat in one pointless article devoid of any type of supporting data.

  4. Andy WeissDC says:

Fat people live shorter lives, so that is one silver lining to make the warmists happy.

  5. Nik says:

The prestigious BBC last year told us that walking or cycling involves higher expenditure of energy, therefore more food, therefore more fossil fuel use, not less.

So who do we believe, this dude or the BBC? Hell of a dilemma!

  6. Banatu says:

Do fat people get free space shuttles or something? Where do I sign up??

  7. John Marshall says:

938 million gallons? I know American gallons are smaller than the good old UK ones but that is ridiculous. Do these fools know exactly how much that quantity is?

  8. Lex says:

Green commies wanna tell you how much you can weigh…it’s all about control.

  9. Curiousgeorge says:

How about if we all just ate Liberals and Progressives? That would counterbalance things would it not? Hell, Fat Al could probably feed a family of 6 for a year all by himself.

  10. kramer says:

So, they don’t really care about our health, they care about saving fossil fuels so that there is less demand for it and hence less upward price pressure. This of course will help the developing world develop faster. Got it.

I knew there had to be some other ‘real’ reason for the attacks on obesity other than health and the associated healthcare costs.

  11. Ulrich Elkmann says:

“Fat people live shorter lives”: Only true if you are really, grossly, obese – about 10-20 % over your “ideal weight” turns out to be quite healthy and live-prolonging (though not for the diet merchants and snake oil sellers). However, since “nutrition science” is even more riddled with superstition and charlatanery than the other branches of “applied life science” (i.e. medicine), said quacks need not despair: “There’s a sucker born every minute”.

They never cared about our health. They would be the first people to celebrate if humanity went extinct.

  13. Jason Phelps says:

So being 12 lbs. overweight equates to a wasted 11.2 billion gallons of gasoline? Obama better release more than a paltry 60 million barrels of oil from the strategic reserve!

  14. Todd Nelson says:

But if we all exercise, we double our CO2 output while doing so. That would make global warming happen twice as fast. I have calculated how much extra fuel America would consume if 10% of America’s 360 million people were 20 pounds overweight. Each person would use an extra18,760,000,000 gallons of oil. Yes, that is over 18 billion gallons for each person. The sum of 10% of those same people would be 6,753,600,000,000,000. That is over 6 quadrillion gallons extra in America alone. Even the US government has not found a figure that high, yet. It is also way beyond the entire world’s fuel reserves. This officially proves that Brian Young is an idiot.

  15. nobody in particular says:

I believe they meant what the total increase would be if say every person in the U.S. gained an additional pound. In any case, I’m not sure why they’re talking about imaginary conspiracies when many prominent CAGW proponents openly advocate using it as an opportunity for global wealth redistribution.
