The Committee To Re-Elect The President (CREEP) broke into DNC headquarters at the Watergate Hotel.
The five men were Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martínez, and Frank Sturgis, who were charged with attempted burglary and attempted interception of telephone and other communications.
This was considered a huge scandal by the New York Times and The Washington Post, who devoted the next three years to bringing the president down.
Oddly enough, when Peter Gleick committed the same crimes in 2012, the Washington Post and New York Times determined that his crimes were for the good of the planet, and definitely not worthy of further investigation.
