The big issues for Australians are not global warming, the rise of China or the loss of biodiversity but the quality of the food they eat, the availability of health care and how safe it is to walk the streets, research released Monday showed.
“These results present a picture of a relatively conservative society intensely concerned with day-to-day issues,” the University of Technology Sydney’s Timothy Devinney said of his findings.
The What Matters to Australians research, co-produced with the Melbourne Business School, matches similar studies in the United States, Britain and Germany.
The German report will be launched in Hamburg in September.
“The consistency across countries is pretty high,” Devinney said.
What mattered to the young was very similar to what mattered to the old and there was consistency in the responses of the rich and the poor.

A sceptical moment unfolded when the Australian public was repeatedly lectured that AGW was causing the draught and it was never going to end. Then recently we had several years of heaver than average rains and flooding. People concluded that these guys are FOS.
