The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.

So dying at the ripe old age of 25 (looking like 65), after toiling under the hot sun for one’s entire life, scratching out a barely-above-starvation existence, with multiple children’s deaths from malnutrition and preventable/curable diseases was “fulfilling”, according to this “deep-thinking humanitarian”? Sounds like he or she needs to be the first in line for the Glow Bull Worming Suicide KoolAid Brigade. They need to “Put up or shut up.“

But I disagree with the Heartland Institute’s 24-hr billboard experiment. Stick to the high ground – do not stoop to the level of the alarmists.

I do hope it is a net positive for Heartland but I’m worried.
Then again, should we skeptics realize that this is a war, much like the U.S. should have realized before 9/11 that the terrorists were at war with us?
Actually I think that the quote is fundamentally wrong. The industrial age and subsequent development did not cause the third world to be in poverty, they lifted the first world out of poverty. Without such developments we would all live in appalling conditions, as our ancestors once did. We need more industrial development so as to lift more people out of their squalor.
