One Thermometer Phil

HadCRUT shows detailed global temperatures going back to 1850.

CRU Information Sheet no. 1: Global Temperature Record

The magical thing about this graph, is that in the HadCRUT database, they only have records from one land based station in the southern hemisphere which has data going back to 1850.

Phil’s one station was located in New Zealand, and shows that it used to be much warmer there – as seen below.

If Phil hadn’t have gotten into climate science, he could have gotten a job as an accountant at Enron.

Steven, we may have to accord you a title that only critiquing the work of climate scientists would allow for: Fishinabarrelist.
    What do you think?

  2. Anthony Watts says:

The warmer temperatures prior to 1900 are likely due to exposure issues. The standard Stevenson screen was not introduced until about 1892, prior to that there was a multitude of thermometer exposure systems, most of them inadequate. Plus it appears there were three station discontinuities prior to 1900. That data probably isn’t reliable.

I’d say its a bit more reliable than the fantasies of Phil. I think the take home message is that these people just make stuff up without regard towards accuracy…. or any regard towards reality.

    • A change of equipment would cause a step function, but the graph shows a linear warming trend from 1850 to 1870.

    • Ben says:

In Hansen’s and Jone’s world, “Prior to 1900” is perfect justification for temperature modifications in Iceland in the 1930s, 1940s.

A study of the methods used to derive the data for that 1850 + graph shows it to be totally worthless.

  4. rw says:

I think it’s remarkable to have gotten the smoothed value for 1980 to be at or above the value for 1940. That’s quite an achievement. Even Big Jim hasn’t managed that one (yet).

  5. Andy DC says:

All other things being equal, doesn’t the Urban Heat Island make a big difference between 1850 and now? Also the lack of an agenda until recent years, which will naturally corrupts and biases the entire system.
