Colorado Springs Wildfire Proves Climate Change Can No Longer Be Ignored

After over a week of burning, approximately 17,000 acres of timber in and around the Pike National Forest has been destroyed, along with almost 350 homes. At least two people have been killed in the fire, and some 35,000 more have been evacuated from their homes while crews battle to keep the blaze in check. In terms of damage done to private property, the Waldo Canyon Fire is the most destructive in Colorado state history. The previous record? The still-smoldering High Park fire just two hours to the north.

In 1871, the Peshtigo fire burned 1,200,000 million acres and killed 2,000 people. The 1871 fire burned seventy times as much forest and killed one thousand times as many people.

As far as Colorado fires go, the 1898 Colorado fire was 100 times larger than the fires this year.  They didn’t have cable TV in 1898, and people were smart enough not to build hundreds of homes right next to each other in the middle of pine forest – which naturally burns every 20 years.

Stroming confuses his own ignorance and stupidity with climate change.

I know I risk sounding cold and heartless, but the environmentalist people have talked about how the world is overpopulated, but then they throw huge fits when a couple of people pass during natural weather events.

  2. DC Andy says:

If people keep constructing big developments in arid forest lands, there are naturally going to be more homes destroyed due to forest fires.

  3. gofer says:

But warmer air holds more water. It should be pouring, except when it isn’t. Forest fires are contradicted by global warming floods, or maybe not. We’re having droughts when we’re not having floods. It’s all science, so shut-up you ignorant, right-wing, Christian, creationist, anti-science, sociapath, evil fossil fuel, Koch Bros, racist, corporate loving, animal hating, selfish, self-centered denier.. Don’t you care about the children and grandchildren?? And, Pellegra was really caused by a virus, not diet. Now, back to my grant application. /s

ALL disasters, no matter what, are now caused by global warming. Can anybody name one that hasn’t yet been associated with AGW?

  5. The Peshtigo fire occurred before Colorado was admitted as a state, in 1876, so it doesn’t count as a fire in “Colorado state history.” At least for that event, by accident apparently, Stroming is accurate. The 1989 fire? Not so much.
