31 Mar 1951 – WEATHER REALLY IS CHANGING NEW YORK, Friday.
Willett was correct, as reported by the National Academy of Sciences in 1975.

Hansen later erased most of the post-1940 decline, because it wrecked his theory, and because he was in a position to rewrite US history without being prosecuted.
MIT may have got that right in 1951, but George Will kicks off an article, Why doom has not materialized:
What went wrong? Nothing, that’s what went wrong!
In the article, Will puts the emphasis on the fact that predictions of resource scarcity (as for example with metals and oil) have failed spectacularly. Almost all of the resources predicted to disappear (as “by 1990”) have actually increased in availability.
As far as the false predictions of doom, at hotair a comment on an agw thread by Rancher was “In 1979 at New Mexico State University a lecturer came in and said that there would be massive famines by 2000. 33 years ago and I’d heard it before then.” In reply to Rancher I wanted to give a limited number of short quotes highlighting some false predictions, but also implying that: the econuts hate mankind, they have a (leftist) agenda, they have explicitly and repeatedly advocated lying to promote that agenda (!!!), in particular they say over and over that it is desirable to make up “scary scenarios,” and with a couple of comments related to the global cooling scare-mongering I imply this “science” verges on the absurd and crackpot.
I recommend that everyone of us fill a word processing file with AGW quotes (google searches will lead us to the quotes!), and we can edit the quotes for brevity, and string selected quotes together to make a desired impression, or add a quote or two to a comment for additional impact. My doom & gloom quotes:
“The Earth has cancer and the cancer is Man.” -Club of Rome
“We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing …” -leftist Senator Tim Wirth, 1993
“We have to offer up scary scenarios… each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective [lying] and being honest [ineffective].” -Stephen Schneider, lead ipcc author, 1989
“The only way to get our society to truly change is to frighten people with the possibility of a catastrophe.” -Daniel Botkin, ex Chair of Enironmental Studies, UCSB
“In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish.” -Paul Ehrlich, Earth Day 1970
“Entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000…” -Noel Brown, ex UNEP Director, 1989
“[Inaction will cause]… by the turn of the century [2000], an ecological catastrophe which will witness devastation as complete, as irreversible as any nuclear holocaust.” — Mustafa Tolba, 1982, former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program
“If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000…This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age.” -Kenneth E.F. Watt, Earth Day 1970
“This cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people. If it continues and no strong action is taken, it will cause world famine, world chaos and world war, and this could all come about before the year 2000.” -Lowell Ponte in “The Cooling”, 1976
“The life of all mankind is in danger because of global warming.” -Osama bin Laden
My whole point was to add a relatively short comment of quotes to hotair. Unfortunately, when I added some commentary here to those quotes, it made the comment too long for my preference. So, the sorry for the length of the comment above.
What makes you say that Hansen is impervious to prosecution? I want to see an investigation for Federal fraud when President Romney starts next Jan. When he can’t adequately explain all the corrections that have the habit of raising current world temperatures then it’s time to cuff him and hold him without bail. Some example to his grandkids…LOL
Am I missing something here? The drop looks like about 0.3 in both graphs.
Yes you are missing something

It’s hard to tell without the 5 year running average for the old one and with graphs cut off at 1970. In my initial eyeball estimate, the first graph looks like it averages 0.3 around 1940 and 0 for 1970, in the second it looks like about 0.2 around 1940 and -0.1 for 1970.
The graph I linked to is at exactly the same scale on both axes. It is quite clear what is going on
I’m just pointing out that the difference is not obvious in the graphs in this post.
Besides, if you added a +2°C offset to Hansen’s data, couldn’t you use the same overlay to argue Hansen “underestimated” the drop between ’40 and ’70?
Nevermind. That’s what you said originally.
