Oops, I’m sorry, I hadn’t seen this post when I replied to your “Hottest Year Ever Update” post.

The UK Met Office is still lobbying for money to buy a new computer. Getting this wrong strengthens their spurious argument.

The Met Office has used supercomputers from Cray, NEC and IBM to mash the numbers behind its weather forecasts. However the Met Office is asking for more.
MPs sitting on Parliament’s Science and Technology Committee said to increase the accuracy of its forecasts and also improve their ability to predict longer term weather patterns, requires significantly higher amounts of computing power.
The committee said scientific advances are being held back due to insufficient computing capacity. The committee’s chairman, Andrew Miller said he understood the financial repercussions of buying a new supercomputer cluster, however he told the BBC it could deliver “as much as a 10-to-one return on investment”.
Currently the Met Office’s supercomputer is only an 7040-core IBM Power6 unit that has a peak performance to 132 teraflops.

The Met Office know they are going to get it wrong but are actually angling for more money for a faster supercomputer so they can get it wrong faster and…………….. 😉

I wouldn’t give spit for a Met office forecast.

The Met office is a complete joke.

  5. RobertvdL says:

Like the IPCC the Met Office only examines human causes, which you can’t identify if you don’t know or understand natural causes.

Thanks Steve, I’ll save that page now. I thought it was specific to the UK , but no matter it’s still wrong.
