“I think the conclusion that urban heat islands contribute essentially zero to the warming we see is on very solid ground.”
The National Weather Service has documented 7-13F UHI in Phoenix
By the end of the series, there was a +4 to 7 ºC (7 to 13 ºF) difference between the urban minimum temperatures and the rural minimum temperatures.
Barrow has 2.2C UHI
During winter (December 2001–March 2002),
the urban area averaged 2.2 °C warmer than the hinterland.www.cas.umt.edu/geography/documents/Hinkel_etal_2003_winter_UHI.pdf
GISS says that New York has 6C UHI

But Muller says there is no UHI
I doubt that he is that incompetent. He’s just doing what he feels he needs to do to promote “The Cause”. OTOH, if he really does believe this “no UHI” crap then he has just elevated himself to the pinnacle of the junk science club, along with Mike Mann.
No he is incompetent in the sense that he is out of his depth and doesn’t know it yet.
The proper context needs to be given. Dr. Muller is talking about the impact of UHI after appropriate adjustments are made. UHI is one of the reasons, data has to be adjusted if one is to have a reasonably accurate climate record. In any case, Dr. Muller is not talking about raw data. After homogenization, the impact of UHI on the global temperature record is very small.
No doubt they correct out 8C from Phoenix and 7C from New York.
Are you trying to be funny?
A full explanation of the process used to make the USHCN Version 2 data set as reliable as possible can be found at: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/ushcn/
Yes, Interesting that they don’t provide graphs of the total adjustment in USHCN2. Probably because they tripled it from V1.
Hey Don , what is your idea of the proper context ? Is it to believe you or my lying eyes ? Muller is spinning so fast he is going to wear out the point on his top . Don , do you suffer from anasognasia?
Johnmcguire,
Proper context would be to disclose that Dr. Muller was talking about the impact of UHI after adjustment. Homogenization largely addresses that issue. He was not suggesting that UHI does not exist. There’s a substantial difference between addressing the minimal impact of UHI in the adjusted temperature data and suggesting that UHI does not exist.
USHCN UHI adjustment is 0.1F A complete joke.
I love this one. I’m having it framed so I can show it when someone tries to tell me, “No-one could be that stupid.”
