New Paper Cherrypicks The 1970s Ice Age Scare For Comparing Heatwaves

Yes,  the 1970s were cold. Why not compare against the 1930s?

This is junk science at its worst

Extreme Heat Is Covering More of the Earth, a Study Says – NYTimes.com

In 1999, Hansen said the exact opposite of what he is claiming now.

Empirical evidence does not lend much support to the notion that climate is headed precipitately toward more extreme heat and drought. The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.

Quick! Write a study using the 1930s as a baseline to warn the world of the imminent Ice Age we’re headed towards!

  2. gator69 says:

This has to be the worst ‘study’ I have ever seen. It is pure salesmanship, pure BS. By all rights this should be Hansen’s swan song.

  3. Chuck L says:

Of course, “journalist” Justin Gillis and the NY Times are all in.

    A couple of thoughts-

    1. The opinion paper is titled “Perception of Climate Change,” which is about as sciencey as astrology and phrenology.
    2. The opinion paper compares the cooler 1950-1980 with the warmer 1980-2010. If he chose to compare the 1920-1950 with the 1950-1980, what temperature data would he use? If he uses the original data that had the 1930’s very warm, then it would support his perception. If he uses the adjusted bogus data that cooled the 1930’s, then it would not support his perception.
    3. The opinion paper relies on a pure statistical argument from noisy data to support a perception. This is the fertile land of scoundrels pushing an agenda.
    4. This paper was written by a NASA GISS activist who refuses to act on his own apocalyptic predictions of sea level rise at NASA GISS offices in NYC.

The man is a crook, pure and simple.

How many millions has hansen reaped in the twenty five or so years he has been pushing this scam ? Follow the money . I agree he is a crook . But there are a bunch of other crooks involved too , not that that fact mitigates any responsibility on the part of hansen. This is the biggest scam since the establishment of the so called federal reserve , you know the one that isn’t federal and has no reserve .

  6. Steve, you are an American Hero for what you are doing. Now we just need a wider audience to see how badly science is being trashed in this country. It’s a disgrace.

  7. Chuck L says:

Gee, if “peer-review” is so important to the ministers of CAGW propaganda, then this study should be disregarded since it was not peer-reviewed but I guess that is only inportant for papers questioning CAGW orthodoxy and dogma.

    What do you mean ‘or’?
