The 2011 minimum extent was about 4% lower than the 2008 minimum, yet NSIDC shows that the percentage of MYI increased by more than 15% from 2008 to 2011.
Which year had more MYI? If you passed third grade and are not a climate alarmist (or lukewarmer) you should be able to figure it out.
What is the volume of the multiyear ice? Stop talking about the area, it’s just a distraction.
That is a good one. Alarmists have been claiming record low area all day.
PIOMAS and CryoSat-2 tell the complete story. I have a feeling the volume has not been growing during the last month. let’s see. Compaction of ice does not recude volume of course..
Volume always decreases during the summer.
Increase in multi-year ice since 2008 means? Has led to? Was enabled by? Says what with confidence about total Arctic sea-ice trends?
Or just says “I have found one metric that is [temporarily] moving in a direction counter to the majority of others”?
Nick
would you please make comments that make more sense?
luckily i did finish the 3rd grade, so according to my calculations the area of multiyear ice increased by 10% from 2008 to 2011. thus the amount of first year ice must have decreased. the balance between first year and multi year is important but varies a bit, so i’m really not sure what the point of this one is besides to insult people’s math skills.
Today Instapundit, a blog with millions of readers is on the case too, with this headline:
“INTELLECTUAL DIVERSITY ON CAMPUS: It’s Not Just Left vs. Right.”
Leading to a blurb from a book: http://collegeinsurrection.com/2012/08/intellectual-diversity-on-campus-its-not-just-left-versus-right/
“When critics of higher education complain about a lack of “intellectual diversity,” mostly what they deplore is the shortage of conservative professors. But there is much more at stake than that.
Consider climate change ….
It turns out the wholesale secular embrace of science insinuates its own range of pious beliefs. Climate theory pretends both to the throne of reason and to public policies dictated as if they were royal decrees. To question a royal decree in this case is construed as treason again reason. But how did reason come to rely more on a consensus of belief than skepticism about such grand causal claims?
Unlike creation science, the advocates of social engineering who believe that science is equivalent to policy intimidate all doubters. The absence of intellectual diversity is detrimental to public policy debate, not to mention how the stranglehold of environmentalism in colleges and universities also steers any debate toward predetermined conclusions. Here the challenge becomes disentangling the science of climate change from the policies that should follow from that science….
When some conservatives argue that the solution to the problem of a lack of intellectual diversity in the academy can be solved by hiring more conservative faculty, my simple and respectful response is that who you hire presumably has a mind, and people, we know from experience, change their minds. Hiring based on conviction is just as dangerous on the right as it is on the left….
What must be considered is how more faculty, other than a few who speak up, can impress on administrators and colleagues why real intellectual debate will keep away whatever version of barbarians at the gate they dread.”
funny choice of metric.
according to Steven, a change from 1 mio km² of 10 m thick 5 +year old ice to 1.2 mio km² of 1 m thick 2 year old sea ice would be a sign of an improvement of the multi year sea ice conditions. astonishing!
so here is what a mathematician would do under such circumstances:
he would use a weight function.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weight_function
for example he would multiply the volume of sea ice with its age, to get a much better impression of the condition of the older sea ice.
If it doesnt involve counting pixels with his cell phone Goddard cant do it
That’s a very cheap shot.
