Three years ago, David Barber told us that all of the multi-year ice had melted.

One of Canada’s top northern researchers says the permanent Arctic sea ice that is home to the world’s polar bears and usually survives the summer has all but disappeared.
Experts around the world believed the ice was recovering because satellite images showed it expanding. But David Barber says the thick, multiyear frozen sheets crucial to the northern ecosystem have been replaced by thin “rotten” ice which can’t support the weight of the bears.
“It caught us all by surprise because we were expecting there to be multiyear sea ice – the whole world thought it was multiyear sea ice,” said Dr. Barber, who just returned from an expedition to the Beaufort Sea.
“Unfortunately what we found was that the multiyear [ice]has all but disappeared. What’s left is this remnant, rotten ice.”

He is repeating the same story again this year. Like Peter Wadhams who tells us every five years that all of the ice will be melted in five years.

“The multi-year ice, what’s left of it, is so heavily decayed that it’s really no longer a barrier to transportation,” he says, explaining how melt ponds have left much of the ice looking like Swiss cheese.
“You could have taken a ship right across the North Pole this year,” says Barber, whose research team was involved in a 36-day research cruise in the Beaufort on a Canadian Coast Guard ship.
There can be little doubt that soft ice near the North Pole is unprecedented – and threatens all of our day to day activities.

Is the North Pole going to melt entirely?
Are the Arctic regions warming up, with prospect of a great climatic change in that part of the world?
Science (says “Popular Science”) is asking these questions. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers who sail the seas around Spitzbergen and the eastern Arctic all point to a radical change in climatic conditions, with hitherto unheard of high temperatures on that part of the earth’s surface.
With the alleged decline in Arctic sea ice, record cold has been occurring over much of the US. Well below freezing last night over much of the Midwest. It does not appear that the lack of sea ice has brought warming to a tipping point as our alarmist friends had warned. But as we all know, 20’s in September are entirely consistent with a warming planet (sarc).
Here in Nj it is going to be 45ºF tonight. It is chillin’ up pretty good.
So, just in case it wasn’t ‘rotten ice’ at the pole they went there and gave it good chopping up with an icebreaker (known as ‘research’).
Oh, if I had only started a business selling helmets that protect from falling sky!
Fun with alarmists. Soon they run out of alarms that are not contradictory to earler alarms. When Arctic ice recovers (note not “if” but “when”) they will move on somewhere else.
Earlier this month a new study came out. Using lake sediments from 2 Yukon lakes (mid 60’s N latitude). Among other things, it concluded that the MWP (or MCA) was approximately 0.9C warmer than the current temperatures in that region.
Another recent study of DNA collected from bear species indicated that the current Polar bear decended from and lives in the same geographic region as its predecessors. Its predecessors, ancient Polar bear, lived through the MWP, RWP and the even warmer periods that existed since the last ice age and that lasted for multiple generations.
In yet another study, published by the government of Nunavut (the geographic area in Canada north of 60 comprising more than half of Canada’s Arctic land mass including the northern reaches of Hudson’s Bay) concluded that Polar bear populations are at least double those published in earlier studies.
Anecdotally, it is alleged that the Vikings sailed the Northwest passage into Hudson’s Bay and south into the United States. There they met an unfortunate ending at the hands of 12th Century Aboriginals.
My point? The current warming and melting in the Canadian Arctic is not “unprecedented” Humans and Polar bears survived earlier periods of warming and melting. Any release of methane from permafrost either did not contribute to additional warming or, if it did, that additional warming was temporary not permanent.
But, shhh, don’t tell the media. You can’t publish a story with the headline “Nothing new here, move along”.
Genetic testing on polar bears shows that they are 4-5 million years old. So, their ancestors lived in multiple eras that were double or triple the warmth of this century.
Now, polar bears are having more triplets than ever. Hooray for Global Warming!

Yeah, so what? Oden was there, this year again, they had a barbecue under the American flag:

Det är sjunde gången Oden besöker Arktis. Första besöket gjordes redan 1991, då Sjöfartsverkets isbrytare som första icke atomdrivna fartyg nådde Nordpolen. Därefter har isbrytaren varit där 1996, 2001, 2004, 2005 och 2009.
No wonder the Arctic ice is melting – it’s being ‘researched’ too often using icebreakers.
It would be more sensible to place your prediction 15-30 years into the future; that way when it doesn’t happen you have more chance of everyone forgetting about it by then.

Lindbergh landed his pontoon plane in the Arctic during times of record ice extent way back in the 1930s.
