IOWA CITY — Educate. Advocate. Agitate.
That isn’t the official slogan for 100 Grannies, but in the year that’s passed since women of a certain age joined together for the benefit of the climate, they say they’ve done all three.
“I think people are impressed we’ve been able to do what we’ve done in a year,” said Barbara Schlachter, the group’s founder.
This includes forming the group, educating children and their parents about the impact of global warming during the Iowa City Arts Festival, attending protest rallies both locally and nationally — even if it meant getting arrested — and launching a local movement to ban single-use plastic bags in Iowa City.
100 Grannies began after Schlachter spent a weekend with her grandchildren and read a book about climate change. The combination of the two ignited concerns about the environment the next generation will inherit.
“Climate change is happening faster than ever,” Schlachter says. “Carbon dioxide levels have passed 390 parts per million in our atmosphere — this is the highest level in human history.”
Eliminating the use of fossil fuels would slow down this acceleration, which is why 100 Grannies support environmental initiatives dedicated to this mission, such as the plastic bag ban.
Eliminating the use of fossil fuels would have frozen countless people in Iowa this winter.
I sent them this E-mail
Ban assault grannies.
Don’t laugh, it is a real problem…

Speaking of freezing — here’s one for you.

Samples of 400-year-old plants known as bryophytes have flourished under laboratory conditions.
Researchers say this back-from-the-dead trick has implications for how ecosystems recover from the planet’s cyclic long periods of ice coverage.
The findings appear in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
They come from a group from the University of Alberta, who were exploring an area around the Teardrop Glacier, high in the Canadian Arctic.
The glaciers in the region have been receding at rates that have sharply accelerated since 2004, at about 3-4m per year.
That is exposing land that has not seen light of day since the so-called Little Ice Age, a widespread climatic cooling that ran roughly from AD 1550 to AD 1850.

And now we know why it’s warming too!
Off-Topic news update to previous story ( stevengoddard[dot]wordpress[dot]com/2013/05/14/understanding-lefty-thinking-about-child-safety/ ) …
Columbia County DA Paul Czajka declines to prosecute NY SAFE Act violation
He had a full magazine in his legal pistol which violated that stupid law. Odds are that the powers-that-be did NOT want this case making it into the higher courts especially the USA Supreme Court.
Now there are quite a few stories up here lately (mirroring Colorado) where the Sheriff and other politicians in non-liberal counties are defying that rat-bastard son-of-a-Cuomo in Albany. If you Google you will see it’s not all clear-sailing for the ex-HUD secretary partially responsible for the 2008 meltdown who now happens to be Governor of this pathetic state.
Nice email Steven, I wonder if you’ll get a reply.
“…Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act.”
Just who is “SAFE”? The crooks? The politicians? (Redundant, I know)
I hate lying liar politicians and their spin. “Affordable Care Act”.
Why not just call all of it what it is, “CONTROL”, and be done with it.
WTF is a “single-use plastic bag?” You buy your stuff, reuse the bags (perhaps for garbage), then recycle the rest. Am I supposed to use paper which kills trees and leaks?
Paper Kills Leaks? 😉 Skeeter needs to get some of that!
When the grannies were young, it was “Save The Trees” and everybody was ecstatic when plastic bags came out. Now it’s gone full circle back to paper. I bet they were protesting paper back then.
The cloth bags are environmentally more harmful than plastic bags. I avoid shopping at supermarkets that do not offer plastic bags.
Slave to temptation I am, I just posted my standard ‘corporate justification for AGW’ questions at their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GranniesForALivableFuture/posts/165306803640688 Let’s see how long that lasts before it gets deleted….
nice 🙂
Weird. The Grannies shared the NIPCC link on their page that I’d left in my comment. They didn’t read what it is??
Maybe she didn’t have the correct spectacles on. 😆
Well, they must have finally put their specs on, their share of the NIPCC Report link has disappeared from their FB timeline….. I should’a gotten a screencapture of it.
Don’t know the average age for the “grannies”, but I know mine made heavy use of “fossil fuels” growing up – especially when you realize her “coal bin” was where they put the fuel oil tank when the furnace got upgraded.
