US Headed For The Coldest Spring On Record

At the two-thirds mark for meteorological spring, 2013 was the second coldest spring on record – slightly warmer than 1975.

ScreenHunter_157 Apr. 26 06.02

Data is from here : Index of /pub/data/ghcn/daily/hcn/

But 1975 had an unusually warm May at 17C. The two warmest months of May were in 1934 and 1896.

Both graphs above show the average of all daily temperatures at all US HCN stations, calculated per year.

The forecast for the first two weeks of May is well below normal, so odds are that the spring of 2013 will be the coldest on record in the US.  This is what Fort Collins looked like at 7pm today (May 1.)

“Government scientists on crack with supercomputers, predicted in January that this spring was going to be super hot!”

    Fixed that one !

  2. philjourdan says:

They just came out with the first half forecast for this May here. Not cold (no snow thankfully), but not normal. About 5-10 degrees below normal for the next 2 weeks.

I think we are going to make a run at that record – meteorological and astronomical (as we are half way through the latter as well).

  3. Mike says:

Have fun poking holes in their hypothesizes. But be careful not to lead credence to their scare tactics of ‘extreme weather events’. Continue to take the longer view of weather, climate, and extreme weather events. More people + more reporters = more events reported. Not necessarily more events.

    • Read what you wrote Mike. What the hell does that mean? Continue to take the longer view?
The whole hoax of global warming is, in the 70’s they were scaring us that global cooling was going to kill millions. Then, in the late 80’s and since, global warming is going to kill millions. The planet is millions of years in age. And, we be talking about the climate killing us, and it has changed from cooling to warming in 30 years? Again, millions of years, vs 30 years. And, no on gets that?

    • mr rude says:

If you look at the graph, the numbers are getting tighter and the extremes are not as extreme as those around 1909-1911.

    • Fred Bruce says:

That is a smart reply…I don’t believe in anything either side claims…the earth is far too complex for anyone to have the absolute answer.

      • sofia says:

Scam artists like Al Gore and many more had created the hoax for personal enrichment…libs are very creative in that and always searching for the way to impose more taxes….

      • richard40 says:

When one side wants nothing other than to find the truth, and leave our free economy alone until we do, while the other wants worldwide socialist new order to stop global warming that may or may not be happening, I know who to trust, and its not Al Gore.

    • balputi says:

It’s equal parts comical and depressing how much your comment indicates that you not only know nothing about climate change, but that you can’t read. Global warming is not a condition of oceans boiling at extreme temps simultaneously, but a momentum of extreme weather that can eventually not be stopped. The fack that you think this article validates your ignorance, when in actuality it further proves the science you refuse to believe, is ironic and hysterical. Then again I am trying reason with someone who likely thinks we came from the same two people white people magically coming together in a jungle.

      • You sound like a total moron.

      • Reasonable11 says:

Amen, balputi! I agree 100%. These people are morons. The NOAA forecast was wrong. But so was my local weather guy’s 7-day forecast. If they can’t forecast a week, how the hell can they forecast 3 months ahead? Any talk that “global warming” isn’t happening is ballyhoo. Ask any polar bear north of 55º N.

      • Del Carbon says:

“a moment of extreme weather that can eventually not be stopped”?

You just won the blue ribbon for psuedo scientific gibber-rubbish. What does that even mean? Please share what aspect of weather can be “stopped”? Or how “extreme weather” (connoting variability) can demonstrate “momentum” (denoting a trend in a direction.) What a load of nonsense.

How about you take a look at what the NCS reporting data indicates: The distribution of the data points are getting dramatically tighter since the 1940s. If there is any “momentum” it’s trending downward and the distribution is getting less extreme.

      • Dave says:

Pierce Corbin is the astrophysicist who predicted the cold Spring.
He has an 85% accuracy and has been profiled by 60 Minutes.
CO2 is not the driver of weather, but the sun, jet stream, and solar weather allow for accurate predictions.
Of course I am arguing with the same people that believed the ice caps would be gone by the 1999.
        Wrong again Chicken Little!

      • Rob K. says:

Hey “Reasonable11”, you want me to “ask any Polar Bear north of 55″…. okay, but that will take a while since there are MANY MORE NOW…. sorry to burst your bubble, Polar Bears are not in decline.

“The latest government survey of polar bears roaming the vast Arctic expanses of northern Quebec, Labrador and southern Baffin Island show the population of polar bears has jumped to 2,100 animals from around 800 in the mid-1980s.”

        and this great quote:

“As Nunavut government biologist Mitch Taylor observed in a front-page story in the Nunatsiaq News last month, “the Inuit were right. There aren’t just a few more bears. There are a hell of a lot more bears.”

Please reserve your tainted, agenda driven, “facts” for the Media Matters crowd – they love that stuff.

      • philjourdan says:

The fact you have no clue what you are talking about is also evident. Global Warming is just that. They glopped on the extreme weather as an after thought to scare the children. However if you look at their models, the original contention was that extreme weather would DECREASE! Why? Every AGW model says the most warming will occur in the non-equatorial regions. Which means the temperature extremes would decrease. Which also means extreme weather would decrease since it relies on extreme temperature differences.

        Not too bright are you?

      • Deoxy says:

EVERYTHING supports what you believe. Hot? Cold? Middle? Rain? No rain? Hurricanes? No hurricanes? ALL of it supports you.

Stop and think about what that means. Stop and think about what that looks like to even open-minded people whom you could convince.

You people sound like crazy, tin-foil-hat-wearing conspiracy theorists – everything supports what you believe.

      • Exactly where weather eschatology goes off the rails. It’d be one thing to document warmer weather; another to speculate about an unprecedented departure from equilibrium. But global catastrophe with no prior empirical examples?

There are only two places where Armageddon by way of weather has been observed: Hollywood, and our imaginations. Stop being taken for a superstitious, cultist dupe.

      • raemu8 says:

It’s not that Liberals don’t know anything, it’s that almost everything they know is wrong – Ronald Reagan. AGWers give it up. You’re laughingstocks. You’re a joke. Every prediction you’ve made on the subject of climate change over the last 40 years has been wrong. You’re a bunch of dupes for the evil left that’s been trying to perpetrate this hoax for the last half century. Wake up….geeze how gullible can you be. I know it’s tough finding out that your entire world view is screwed up, but it’s May 3rd and it was 30 degrees this morning in Texas. Get a clue.

      • Will says:

Let me remind you of a front-page headline in the Boston Globe some years ago, above an article that has never been apologized for or further explained. “THE REAL NAME OF KATRINA IS GLOBAL WARMING.”

      • sunsettommy says:

James Hansen talked of a boiling ocean and Al Gore talked of a million degree earth core.

        What do you talk about?

      • Are you still buying or selling Al Bores Climate the same wagon so that you can peddle more false hope in what science dropped long ago.

    • Cornfed says:

Here’s the thing with the news: when it’s hot, they scream about global warming being the cause. When it’s abnormally cold, nary a peep about it. You can’t have it both ways: if hot weather is evidence FOR AGW, then cold weather is evidence AGAINST it. If weather does not equal climate, then when the media report on a hot spell, they just need to STFU about AGW.

      • McGehee says:

Actually, for cold weather they do damage control by insisting it’s all due to “climate change.” Because somehow every uptick in the thermometer is climate, and every downtick is merely weather — but even weather that’s the opposite of what they predicted is proof of their predictions.

Seriously, these “climate change” scammers are worse than economists.

      • pappad says:

Actually, when it’s cold, they scream bloody murder that the COLD is caused by “global warming.” Their “rationale” is that equatorial heat rises, pulling the arctic air further south.

      • Eric says:

The media is the mouthpiece and recipient of many favors from the liberal party elites. As such, the liberals need other people’s money (that big pot of cash collected by the gov’t each year) to redistribute. This ensures their survival by paying off everyone.

The answer is always money with liberals..

  4. Lance says:

their super computers are still getting OC4 errors…(old main frame programmers will know this error)…

  5. Ian neill says:

yes ,but the BBC today concentrated on the fires in California, caused by a hot dry spring in that part of the state. Cheery-picking at its best

  6. Cheryl says:

They’ll market this as “Climate Change” (extreme weather events) and it is all our fault no matter what. Keep pounding the truth here! But like Mike, above, be careful they don’t use your information to support their insanity. Not sure you can avoid that, but keep that in mind.

  7. Steve Case says:

So NOAA predicted that Mar-Apr-May would be warmer than normal. I’m guessing that most of their 3-month predictions are for warmer than normal. Then when it turns out that way they can crow and make the case for “Global Warming” and the fawning news media will follow up with the appropriate reports about they are right about “Climate Change” . I don’t expect to see many “Main Stream” media reports about how they got it wrong this time.

  8. Richard says:

The “Snow a thing of the past” back in 2000 comes to mind.

  9. Owen says:

Once they cook the books this will turn out to be one of the warmest springs in a hundred years. Reality is an old fashioned, out-of-date concept in an Obama world.

    • Alan Grossberg says:

      WMD.

      • welldoneson says:

Interesting choice of OT comment, Alan, especially considering we are now seeing the chemical weapons that were moved from Iraq to Syria before the first invasion. And, considering that ALL countries had intel that Iraq had WMD. You lefties just can’t get over your wrong, can you? Just keep repeating it, hoping someone will mistake yer BS for shoeshine. Too funny.

    • Can’t believe a word that Obummer says!

    • Jeff DeWitt says:

I’ve no doubt you’re right, it’s Orwell in action.
But this whole global warming thing is easy to understand.
If it’s hotter than normal it’s because of global warming.
If it’s colder than normal it’s because of global warming.
If it’s more NORMAL than normal it’s because of global warm.
And anyway you look at it the poor and minorities will be the hardest hurt.

  10. Alan Grossberg says:

To be fair, though he’ll never admit it, Joe Bastardi was predicting a “snap to warm in March” until sometime in February. Then he changed it to April. So much for that one.

  11. gary says:

what do you bet that NASA figures out a way to make this spring the hottest on record?

  12. theJackal says:

“The cooling is part of the warming, you uneducated filth just aren’t smart enough to comprehend such complex climate models.” Gag, these moon bats are actually saying and believing this crap. They are hopeless, maybe when a glacier crushes their Prius’s in their driveway they wake up to the hoax.

    • Ian W says:

Sorry Jackal – what they will say as their prius is crushed by the Mississippi glacier as it calves into the Gulf of Mexico is: “When this lot melts its going to be really really hot!!”

  13. jim mullins says:

someone call Al Gore fast ,we need some hot air

  14. JohnGalt says:

    Could be a toss-up.

  16. Jr Hughes says:

GW bush is completly at fault

  17. Richard_Iowa says:

OK – no one panic. Please know that this is weather and not climate. And, understand that the science is settled. Ignore the fact that physicists are still testing Einstein’s theories on relativity after what???, 110 years or so. That is a inconvenient distraction. So, all is well and once this enormous amount of snow melts because of global warming we can all go outside and get back to hugging trees. Was I supposed to say “global warming,” or “climate change?” Doesn’t matter. It’s hot here.

  18. makerT says:

not here! the hottest spring ever. its was 92 the otherday when itshould be in the low 70’s. News is WRONG!

  19. Lots of censorship on this site!

  20. HMichaelH says:

I know others have said it, but I’m sure this is all the result of Global Warming!

  21. B. B. Green says:

Because its rare to snow in Colorado in May? HAHA.

  22. Bill Jiden says:

Al Gore’s immense girth is blocking out the sunlight!

  23. Donato Dominguez says:

I live in South Texas. Tonight we are predicted to have the coldest May 2 by 3 degrees since they started keeping records in the 1880s or so. If it was going to be the hottest May 2 on record, the global warming nuts in the media would be slinging slobber and drool right and left lamenting the end of life as we know it due to man made global warming.

  24. jvnvch says:

See, they told us the climate was going to change.

      • jvnvch says:

        Learn to recognize sardonicism, genius.

      • Me says:

It’s pretty hard to tell when a newbee makes a comment like you did and expects people to know the difference. Just a peice of knowledge you may want to consider the next time you make a jackoff statement like you just did. And yer response was very telling in Me opinion that yer first statement was your true intentions.

      • Me says:

        Now stop drooling….

      • jvnvch says:

I see there are two of you geniuses. Of course my original statement was sardonic. Duh. The climate always changes, for chrissake, and at the moment it seems to be changing in ways not predicted by the gullible AGW believers of the world.

  25. Craig Sanders says:

As a former NOAA forecaster, I remember an old guy in our office talking about why we kept a mention of showers in the forecast for a couple of days despite the low chances. He said, “Just keep forecasting it long enough, and it’s bound to occur”. So it is with any calamity like global warming or climate change.

  26. Alex says:

    Global warming?????? Hmmmm???? Scammmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hmmmmmm????????

  27. TeaPartyPat says:

Please share this info with any idiots you know who still don’t believe the Global Warming hoax was a tax scam and another environmental lie from the U.N. Globalist aimed at undermining America’s sovereignty.

  28. Fred says:

Everybody break out your hockey sticks.

  29. JKuper says:

I weep for modern day conservatism. We have truly become a sorry lot. For all my fellow conservatives, I’m really curious. How, exactly, do you determine when the scientific community is right and when they are wrong? It would seem, by all appearances, that they are only wrong when they disagree with our agenda.

    • rrroark says:

How about when the lead scientist, when asked to release his raw data and his methodology (so that old 4th step in the scientific method – duplication of results – can be done) uses “The dog ate my homework!” excuse?

    • welldoneson says:

JK, your comment makes it obvious you are NOT a conservative. We are seeing this more and more, rabid lefties claiming to be otherwise. False Flag Fool. TOO funny.

    • philjourdan says:

Um, it is no one’s job to “decide” who is right and wrong. For the true scientists (political persuasion has no bearing. See Richard Courtney and Willis Eschenbach), the data leads to conclusions and more testable hypotheses.

“Agenda” is the reason we are in this mess. instead of letting the data lead, the Alarmists are leading the data.

    • late late late bloomer says:

the other point is, the onus to be correct is on the authoritarians that change laws based on their agw ‘science’. if i, say, don’t believe an ounce of global warming baloney, big deal if i’m wrong. it hurts no one but myself and my big car and bad choices or whatever. statists and agw-proponents, on the other hand, advocate force and coercion such as taxes and new regulations to go with their beliefs. so it is, indeed, a very big deal if they’re incorrect, or even unsure. true f’ing maniacs.

    • Hugh K says:

“I weep for modern day conservatism.”

There you go…let it all out. Before we can see properly, we must first shed our tears to clear the way. All better now? Good.

Now lets “see properly” – The “scientific community” is made up of individuals that are naturally at odds. And rightly so – If that should ever change, science would no longer have a practical value, would it? Searching for a consensus in science is a vain and dangerous pursuit practiced by those with a personal agenda which only serves to blind objectivity and in turn any possible benefit(s) of the science.

A better endeavor would be to man up, stop pretending you’re something you’re not, refrain from injecting politics into science, do your own research, throw in a heaping tablespoon of common sense and make your own individual decisions about what is right or wrong in the science – not the scientific “community”.
But a word of caution….In doing the above, you just might look in the mirror and see a modern day conservative staring back at you.

      • pappad says:

Despite those who think the issue was more religious than scientific, the fact is that “consensus” among “scientists” of his time, thought Galileo was WRONG about this being a heliocentric “universe.” Just like most “scientists” believed that malaria was caused by a “miasma” emanating from the swamps that people breathed in at their peril, or, before that, that the human heart was the source of all emotion.

    • Sharpshooter says:

Well, I’m a infidel libertarian, but here’s a few clues:
      1) When their predictions materialize, and don’t count on fudged numbers.
      2) When their models are ACCURATE both going forward as well as backwards.
      3) When they argue their points like scientists, not like screechy eight year-olds.
      4) When they can demonstrate how a trace gas can cause what they say it will cause.
      5) When they are NOT caught in numerous cases of SIGNIFICANT fraud.
      6) When they learn science is done in an open process, not by press conference.
      7) When they learn the difference between theology and the Scientific Method.
      8) When they appeal to people with a grasp of science, not grade-schoolers and utterly clueless media chumps and politicians.
      Need some more?

      • pappad says:

Not a bad compilation, Sharpshooter. I pretty much agree. This all started with Rachael Carson’s “Silent Spring,” and “Mando Cane” which were ridiculous on their faces. But, it made Rachael Carson a virtual household name and brought her fortune as well. Seeing this, other pseudo-scientists jumped on the bandwagon.

    • Tharpa says:

      JKuper,

Ditto. I am a conservative (though maybe not 100%), have two degrees in science, and have the same thought. To some extent, I think the problem is simply that not everyone “gets” the scientific approach. I haven’t made up my mind on the whole “global warming” thing. I wish there was a site that approached the question in an unbiased way, (ideally presenting both sides) without the intention of making fun of the opposition. It does appear to be a complex question and I’m suspicious of anyone on either side who thinks that it isn’t. Having said that, the article on this page is better than the majority of the comments.

      • Me says:

Well if you haven’t made up your mind yet, it means the debate is far from over, as they always calim.

      • PhilJourdan says:

Tharpa, Steve is very sarcastic. He basically likes to tweak the nose of the alarmist.

But we all are pretty much like you. We do not deny Global warming, we simply acknowledge that there is no (or insufficient) evidence man is causing it. Indeed, with the increase in CO2 in the last 17 years, and no resulting increase in the global temperatures, there are many other factors at work. So we want real science (hence the name) to resume.

However, if you want a “neutral” site, try JudithCurry.com. She is a “Warmist” (more like a lukewarmist now, but she comes from that side) who abhors the shenanigans of the “team”. The comments on her site are very hot. But if you wade through them, you will find a good mix of both sane Warmists and sane Skeptics (I classify Mann and Gore as Alarmists, not Warmists).

I do not think Steve would object to the mention of her site. He is actually a very fair minded person who does talk about both sides. He just pokes more fun at the extremists that exist on the Alarmist side. They provide the most material for it.

      • Me says:

You went a little farther than I would have Phil! but to each their own!

      • Me says:

Yeah he could, but, with the lukewarmist, fer Me it is like a salesman sticking their foot in the door to keep this bullshit going.

It didn’t take long for the cold to filter up from below. I thought it would take longer than 1563 days.

  31. In an attempt to “fix” global warming, leftists have created the coldest spring on record. Another job well done, statistic!

In seriousness though, every bad storm is blamed on global warming. Why not play pin the “blame” for coldest spring on record on the leftists?

  32. Just imagine how cold it would have been if it weren’t for global warming.

  33. icemcan says:

Ok I am no scientist, but I can observe the world around me. The weather people can not accurately predict what will be happening in any given city in the next 7 days. 45. peterbuiltgal says:

Okay, there is global worming and if there wasn’t than we would still be in the ice age and we would not even be here to discuss it.

    • silverlining says:

Volcanic events could be a reason for ice ages. They might last longer than CO2 warmings because of the difficulty in the time it would take ice to melt. Plants making CO2 can’t grow in ice. I don’t think there is conclusive evidence one way or another on what action should be taken however.

  48. Dustin says:

Sadly, I think the Global Warming farce is going to damage the very name of science. The general public isn’t going to forget this one so easily. Some of them will tune science out completely. Tragically, the fraudsters claiming to be scientists weren’t practicing scientific method and the few who were, were pushed aside and ridiculed.

    • rivercocytus says:

If he were ranting in our century, that old crank Nietzsche would have crowed, “SCIENCE IS DEAD!”

That does seem to be the way that goes. Science has become political and therefore is no more science, but is falsely so called. However, this move started long before global warming, or even the ice age scare of the 1970’s.

Right you are. In MY lifetime, it started with the phony “DDT is causing the decline of the population of Bald eagles and Peregrine falcons because, in these birds’ diets, it causes their eggshells to thin to the point they won’t bear the weight of nesting birds.” Nonsense, of course, but it worked, and Rachael Carson’s “Silent Spring” farce furthered the scam along with “Mondo Cane.”

Hooded sweatshirt all day here in central Texas. Unheard of in May!! Suppose to be shorts and t-shirts. Where is my global warming?

  53. The issue with data and how you show your metrics (e.g. come to your conclusions) to others is that it can all be manipulated. Believe me, I do it all the time (with software bugs, not the weather). Nevertheless, it is 2-May-13, 9:15PM and nearly 87 F degrees outside and humidity so low I can hardly breathe and no cool weather in sight until Sunday. No air conditioner in our house because when this house was built– in 1975, no less–temps in the high 80’s were extremely rare. Long story short, what the heck are you smokin’? Cuz I want some!

Whooo that was hard to think about…..Now we better poor lots of money into taming this weather stuff. I’m convinced. Kind of like Maryland taxing various parts of the city based on rainfall. That’s what I’m talking about

Global Warming how is that working out for you???

  59. Del Carbon says:

Where’s the warming? Did you notice on the May temperature chart that the red “average” line is flat, or slopes ever-so-slightly down? This tells us there has been climate COOLING (albeit less than 1 degree) since the measurements started. And the data points are getting bunched closer to the average line (versus highly distributed before 1940.) This indicates that temperatures are LESS volatile, meaning there is less year-over-year climate change than in the first half of the 20th century.

    • Del Carbon says:

I know it’s only data from MAY, but it’s a monthly average of measurements taken as “All HCN Stations” for the entire month of May, every year for more than a hundred years. That’s thousands of data points, and the data doesn’t lie.

Good to see all the flat-Earthers from The Drudge Report here! So, we’ve got a record cold spring, coupled with back-to-back-to-back-to-back record hot summers and/or autumns and…all is perfectly normal! Nothin’ to see here!!! All these climate change kooks are out to lunch! Ya know, in all honesty, I’d be willing to let you guys revel in your conservative mental illness and, in the grand scheme of things, I wouldn’t give a shit. But the fact the you’re managing to drag me, my family and the rest of the planet down with you is a BIT of an issue. Sadly, I’ve come to the conclusion that most of you are just too stupid and indoctrinated to understand what the adults in the room are really talking about, so all I can say is this – your denial is going to cost us our ability to live on this planet. I don’t think there is much we can do about it at this point; the deniers have delayed too long – they’ve “WON”. What else can you say or do? Not much… I hope conservative smugness is a flotation device – you’re gonna need it.

    • You are an idiot. There haven’t been any record hot summers in the US for over 70 years.

      • CJTO says:

        You sure about that, Cletus?

          You must be liberal.

      • rivercocytus says:

People forget how hot summer can be. It’s like as soon as we had heard of the idea of manmade global warming, suddenly every uncomfortably warm event became suspect.

It’s also lame; if its too hot in the city, the city and its citizens shouldn’t be bemoaning ‘manmade global warming’, they should work to reduce the level to which their whole environs is a heat island.

Bottom line, there is a healthy approach to reducing pollution, increasing efficiency and constructing ecologies that involve humans – and of course, reducing ugliness.

So far none of the left’s green initiatives since Global Warming (arguably, Global cooling as well) have done these things.

Which is what you tried to tell us 20 years ago. We knew you were lying then and we’re even more certain you’re lying today. Your East Anglia leaders let the cat out of the bag and even Al Gore has been keeping his yap shut about global warming–concentrating instead on that other, latest distraction–who’s been voted off the island.

Seems you are describing yourself. Since you are new here, you had to follow it from Drudge.

So here we see a typical liberal Drudger. They smell something that is not in compliance with their religion, so they run to the source to douse the flames of knowledge before they can spread! All the while not realizing that the facts and figures are easily verifiable, and thus making them look like the religious fools they are.

Next time you want to criticize others, make sure you are not criticizing yourself – which is the sum total of your contribution to this discussion. No facts, no evidence, just useless ad hominems and a navel gazing on the part of the mentally challenged.

I hope you continue to operate with your head placed firmly up your anal orifice! Rely on your political beliefs to support your scientific claims, and continue to appear to be the moron you seem to be. If you put aside your political bias and look at the fact, you will see those data used in studies without any subjugation to political correctness indicate the earth gets warmer and then it gets cooler and then it gets warmer and then it get cooler, ad infinitum. Global warming is simply the scheme of people like AlGore and yourself to make a huge amount of money from the taxpayers and commercial businesses who are intimidated by the false claims of scientific documentation. Check into all the controversy surrounding the U.N. and Meteorological data used by the looney left who claim we are all going to perish from burning up. Reputable scientific data collected by real scientists who have no political bias or financial gain document the recent decades-old cooling the earth is experiencing. And if I have my choice, I would elect for warmer weather, rather than cooler weather. The abundance of good things which happen in warm climates makes a frozen environment pretty bleak!

    • Zxmap Zzmrp says:

If you payed attention in school you would know..

The idea that man-made pollution is responsible for global warming is not supported by historical fact. The period known as the Holocene Maximum is a good example– so-named because it was the hottest period in human history. The interesting thing is
this period occurred approximately 7500 to 4000 years B.P. (before present)– long before humans invented industrial pollution.

  76. SteveP says:

The whole argument for global warming…uhh, climate change… hinges on two arguments.
The first is that CO2 regulates atmospheric temperature, therefor climate.
My first reaction to this claim was “Seriously? That doesn’t make any sense”. To think that a gas, even one as important to life as CO2 is, comprising less than 4/100 of 1% of the atmosphere overrides and makes irrelevant all the other factors of climate is ignorant and preposterous. Some people need to take notice of the fact that the nuclear furnace that crosses the sky every day heats things up and ask themselves, ” Gee, could that possibly play a part in weather and climate?”. Of course, that’s just one of many factors in the complex, chaotic, and poorly understand system that is our atmosphere.
The second argument is that we can accurately measure the average temperature of the atmosphere to a fraction of a degree.
We’re supposed to freak out and stop all industry because of a claim that the atmosphere has warmed 7/10 of 1 degree in 100 years? I’ve even read of people making claims of atmospheric measurements for the whole Earth of 0.14 degree. Seriously? I don’t know the margin of error for such measurements but I think any claim that it’s less than 1/10 of 1 degree is absurd.
History shows that even with temperature variations such as the warmists predict (2-6 degrees/100years), any life that can adapt really has nothing to worry about. It happened many times before the Industrial Revolution and it’s never going to stop. Actually, history shows that rising temperature is good for man. It’s when it goes the other way (and it will eventually) that we have a problem.
In studying climate over the past 15 years or so, and grokking intently, I’ve come to what I believe is a profound conclusion. Temperature will trend above average for a while, and then for some reason that will change and temperature will trend below average for a while. If the past is prologue (and it is) man will survive.
For those who believe argumentum ad auctoritatem is important, I hold a BS in botany with a minor in meteorology.

Lets see if we get another 1+ deg warming adjustment to the April temp. That March adjust was just pure fraud. The only adjustment that is suppose to be applied is TOB. All stations after 2000, with many before that, no longer receive final adjustments after TOB.(or at least I haven’t come across any). And you can’t tell me we had major time changes across the country for temp readings in March. The only plausible excuse I can think of is if there was a smaller than normal percentage of reports submitted. Maybe the delayed reports are in and a revision for March will happen. But I wont hold my breath.

  79. PeterB in Indianapolis says:

To any and all who make the patently-absurd-on-the-face-of-it claim that snow in May is somehow proof of “AGW”; here is something to think about…

It can’t snow above about 1 C (34 Fahrenheit), and for May in ANY part of the US, that ain’t warm, that is WELL below the normal temperature for May 2nd and 3rd.

What causes snowstorms in May is a cold front backed by UNUSUALLY COLD air.

Also, please take note – if it is freezing in Minnesota on May 2nd, OF COURSE there are going to be some places, globally, which are ABOVE NORMAL for that date as well. Warm and cold air move around the planet on these things called JET STREAMS, and there are bound to be several places that are quite warm, in spite of the fact that the central part of the US has been well below normal for well over 2 months straight now.

The main thing to remember, is that the overall trend has been flat since 1997, and it now looks like the trend line has begun to flip back over to cooling (which is pretty much what anyone with half a brain or more would expect after 30 years or so of warming).

That is why the leftists changed the name from global warming to climate change. They knew their models were BS, and they might be proven wrong if the globe started getting cooler. But with Climate Change you are always right, since the climate will always be changing in one direction or the other.

  84. erschroedinger says:

Maybe you should read this: As Northern Hemisphere temperatures remain below normal more than a week into the official start of spring, a team of meteorologists and climate scientists are pointing to recent research that suggests sea ice cover is a likely culprit.

Recent imaging from the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center showed a historic minimum in Arctic ice cover last fall, and current data reveals that sea ice cover—which recently reached its maximum for the year—is at its sixth lowest extent in the satellite record.

Less Arctic sea ice—which is caused by global warming—alters atmospheric circulation in a way that leads to more snow and ice, said climate scientist Jiping Liu, who led a 2012 study on the topic published by the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences.

It’s a tough thing to understand. Less ice at the top of the world, often considered the planet’s thermostat, might normally signal warmer global temperatures, not colder ones.

But the way weather works isn’t so simple. Without a substantial ice cover, Arctic wind is less constrained. The jet stream—the belt of cool air that regulates weather around most of the Northern Hemisphere—then dips farther and farther south, bringing cold air from the Arctic closer to the Equator.

The result is much colder weather dipping into the spring much longer, and more forcefully, than normal.

  85. MikeEE says:

yesterday when I left work our afternoon temperature in Columbia, MD was 53 degrees. that’s about 30 degrees below normal. I’m always hearing about global warming when the temperature gets 10-15 degrees above normal, but it’s dead silence right now.

Since the beginning of February we’ve had so many days that are 10-15 degrees below normal that are at or above normal. I don’t remember a year this cool and I can remember back to the 1960s.

    MikeEE

  86. MikeEE says:

That last paragraph was supposed to say…

Since the beginning of February we’ve had so many days that are 10-15 degrees below normal (or more) and very few that are at or above normal. I don’t remember a year this cool and I can remember back to the 1960s.

  87. pappad says:
