Arctic Closed To Shipping – Too Much Ice

At the North Pole Camera yesterday it got down to -8.6 Celsius. http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northpole/PAWS819920_atmos_recent.html
DMI map shows the sub-freezing cold on the Greenland side of the pole, and also a newer and expanding area of subfreezing cold on the other side of the pole. http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/weather/arcticweather_imagecontainer.php
And the DMI mean-temperature-north-of-80-degrees graph ticks down yet again. http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/meant80n.uk.php
And, from your post, by comparing this year’s and last year’s pictures: You can see how much colder it is [at the North Pole camera site], if you have ever lived in the north and seen the difference between a thaw and a freeze. Last year was far more slushy. Last year there were melt-water pools. This year it isn’t thawing when it is suppose to thaw.
Thanks for your detailed continually updated coverage of the Arctic situation with pictures at: http://sunriseswansong.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/the-big-chill-sea-ice-version/
Steven is this legit? Will the Chinese cargo ship that is attempting the trip over the top of Russia be forced to turn back or will it get ice breaker help?
They will need an icebreaker to get through.
They probably have a couple of icebreakers travelling with them. That is normal for that route. Either the vessels are fitted to handle the ice, they have an ice breaker traveling with or both.
Steven Can’t be legit that picture. Where are the boat people ? No sign of them 🙂 Those rowers are there somewhere. Oh wait I see them. They are being towed by the chinese icebreaker.
The rowers are still short of Victoria Island. The kayakers, on the other hand, have made it all the way to Kugluktuk. The rowers should have designed a more kayak-like boat..
Any updates on the rowers?

There they are
The rower/dragger/sailors in the sailboat are about to catch up with the rowers in the high-tech, custom-built, two-man rowboat that can’t handle much wind. They are in the Cape Hope area. Meanwhile the firemen kayakers are taking it easy in Kugluktuk.
Check in on Dangerous Waters. They are delayed. The picture of the weather page shows “Ice Pressure Warning in effect”., https://www.facebook.com/DANGEROUSWATERSTV
Oceanographic Research ship Tara went East towards Franz Joseph land and met ice ((imho)as denoted by the period where it stopped reporting water temperture) and is now going home.

Looks like Ellesmore Island and N & E Greenland shorelines got a fresh dumping of snow.

Arctic temperatures are now below the sea water freezing point. It might rebound a bit in the next few days, but we can assume refreezing is imminent (which is unusually early !).
