These are air temperatures.
http://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/sst/ophi/color_sst_NPS_ophi0.png
air temps are way below freezing……SST’s are also below freezing…
If that sight breeze right now opens up more ice….exposing more water to air
…..area and extent are going to take a major jump up!
Blimey looking at that its as if the planet as lurched several weeks ahead of schedule. It’s going to be interesting to see when the temps finally recover to something more like we’re used to seeing. Okay it’s pretty close in some areas to previous charts but for length of consistently low temps its quite something
I wonder what colour GISS will make the Arctic this year?
Pink has already been used they need to find a Hotter color for their product! It is a shame they are running out of colors to express all the warming they are causing.
The A in AGW is Climatologists!
Reblogged this on Climate Ponderings.
Thanks for clarifying title. Air temps still not quite to freezing point of seawater, and this is only within small zone near pole after all. Nonetheless, a summer only rivaled by 2004 in recent memory in the highest regions of the Arctic.
Harold, but they are below freezing for fresh water…and that’s what ice cubes are
http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/map/images/fnl/sfctmp_01.fnl.gif
Harold,
coldest since 1958, coldest on the DMI record north of the 80th northern parallel. The rate of sea ice extent decline slowed recently. A big storm could suddenly reduce it though.
Harold, check out the temperatures at the infamous “North Pole Camera,” situated in the heart of the current cold. Sea-water has been freezing there for over a day, and froze a lot during prior days as well. http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northpole/PAWS819920_atmos_recent.html
I’ve been watching the view through the North Pole Camera for years, and have never seen it look so cold at this point in the “melt season.” To see how it looked a year ago, check out the Aug 5 update on this old post of mine: http://sunriseswansong.wordpress.com/2013/07/28/lake-north-pole-vanishes/
That slushy-looking view is far more typical for the month of August. This year’s view is (dare I use the word) “unprecedented.”
RE: Obama OFA re-meme – “The current arctic summer is the coldest, it’s caused largely by natural variation, and it poses significant risks for our ice-free meme. Some members of NSIDC,GISS,NOAA,NASA disagree with this simple, scientifically proven fact.”
Oh no the temperature has fluctuated by a degree or two! Everyone panic like a bunch of cavemen….
Or maybe just buy a coat?
In 300 years the planet may increase temperature by half a degree and new farmlands may be open or maybe it will get colder. The great news we will all be dead by then and maybe some intelligent people will live on the planet that spend their money on things besides war and freaking out over unimportant information.
It doesn’t work like that. Arctic temperatures are buffered by the latent heat of melting ice. The one degree difference is an indication of huge deficiency in heat.
