It is one of the greatest puzzles in the science of climate change, and has been used by skeptics to cast doubt on global warming: Why, when the world is getting hotter, is the Antarctic getting colder?
Now, a scientist thinks she may have uncovered the answer.
Cecilia Bitz, an atmospheric scientist from the University of Washington in Seattle, believes that oceanic currents are taking heat away from Antarctica and carrying it north, reports the Sunday Times.
If global warming is a reality why is Antarctic ice growing? Scientist thinks she has an answer
Yesterday, experts said that hot ocean currents around Antarctica are melting the glaciers, and today they say that ocean currents are making the water cold around Antarctica.
Another study has been published, concluding that warmer ocean waters are melting Antarctic glaciers and contributing to sea level rise. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet has enough land ice to raise sea level by 16 feet alone. Meanwhile, 2014 is making the record books as the hottest year in recorded meteorological history.
In summary, global warming makes the water around Antarctica both hot and cold, and causes both record ice and record melt.
Yea, but that explanation, that heat causes ice, is kind of old. I always make ice cubes on my stove burners.
It’ll be because the “global warming” makes the air denser so you get a down draught into the house causing the stove to become a mini-freezer.
It might also help if you lit it.
No wonder my soup never boils! 😉
Have you no idea how science now works? The white blobs forming over the oceans show the world is currently boiling. So logically those icy things floating in your soup show it is already boiling. Boiling is the new freezing!
Ah! I am beginning to see it. I unfortunately, do not have the benefit of the new Common Core education.
If he lit it all the heat sucked in to that expanding LNG he’s freezing ice cubes with would go up in a puff of flame… and blow the rest of the house up after being filled up with all that (now) expanded natural gas from an unlit stove.
Another senseless climate catastrophe. Only a carbon tax could have saved the house… and a couple of hundred First Class tickets to Peru for a global conference.
Well, apparently warm water freezes faster than cold.

I’m sceptical … but just a thought – if they only count ocean for “ocean warmth” … if more of the cold ice is freezing, is this why average ocean temperature is increasing? (by a midges dongle)
“Science” is being turned on its head, doing flip flops, and contorting itself to the point where it is no longer recognizable. But it’s all in the name of a “good cause,” right?
You’re too hard on the 97%. Most of them aren’t liars. They’ve elected to talk about something that is too complicated for them to understand (much less accurately model with a computer sim). They’re reduced to incoherent babbling because most of what they honestly thought was true has turned out to be false. To rescue their belief system, they have had to convince themselves that both “A” and “not A” are true. This causes their heads to explode.
Here is the problem with the “97%” … pure and simple:

So Antarctic waters at about 0C are extracting the heat from Antarctic air at temperatures well below 0C. Quite the refrigerant cycle. Have these “experts” ever taken a course in thermodynamics?
NOPE!!!!!
We all need to understand the language, use the “more acidic ocean” as your guide. In that case the base ocean becomes less base. Once you understand double-speak it is much easier to nod along in agreement, it helps to take your soma and finish your daily hate, your mind will be clear then.
Antarctica is kind of an oxymoron, but it’s not the only moron.
“taking heat away from Antarctica and carrying it north”
Excuse me, but which heat? It’s the coldest continent on earth! And that would leave behind a continent that’s even colder after that heat transfer has happened? For heat to leave Antarctica that way, even colder water should arrive there in the first place. From where? The Arctic?
LOL I’m going to retrain into this climate science business, make some stuff up and some serious money in the mean time. No I’m not, I still have a remote sense of pride and honour left in me.
“She says that increased snowfall on the Antarctic continent has expanded the ice shelves that ring the continent. When it meets warmer sea further north it melts, and floats on the salt water of the ocean, forming a ‘blanket’ of cold water that can freeze again more easily
=================
So now the ice sheets are expanding! Who knew? As to cooler oceans, yes that has been observed before the sea surface freeze expansion. Cooler SST is why the SH sea ice has expanded.
What we have been seeing is the use of tautologies. If the result is 1, then the cause is x=1, if the result is 0, the cause is also x=1. Opposite results are caused by the same value of x. This is anti-scientific because the theory is stated and used in such a way that no evidence can be a contradiction of it. This is what academic Marxists used for decades when things did not go as predicted. If the workers are rebelling, it is because they are alienated. If they are not rebelling, it is because alienation makes them incapable of rebelling.
The Guardian covered something along these lines last week, loudly proclaiming possible 15 feet sea level rises due to melting land ice caused by warming waters….but upon checking the article it became clear the ‘study’ itself acknowledged there was no warming of oceans, so no ‘melting’ land ice and no rising sea levels.
The article claimed 3′ sea level rise by 2100, but made no mention of timescales to a completely ice-free Antarctic and the inferred 15′ rises. Perhaps not surprising. It was risible stuff which quickly got pulled from their environment home page, but you can still see it here just for the hell of it.

Its 2 feet IF all the ice in 6 glacier basins that are losing ice were to melt completely. The rest of West Antarctica is stable but IF it were all to melt then the rise would be 16 feet. While there is a lot of uncertainty, East Antarctica is growing enough to offset the ice loss in the West.
If experts say it, I believe it – NOT !
Thanks to the 2009 Climategate emails and five years of “official responses” to documented evidence of data manipulation, . . .
All inhabitants on the third ball of dirt orbiting our pulsar-centered Sun share a common destiny:
a.) Continued totalitarian one-world rule, or
b.) Restoration of constitutional government
There is no choice c.)
When alarmists are completely polarized (pun intended) in their thinking, do they call each other “deniers”?
In summary, global warming makes the water around Antarctica both hot and cold, and causes both record ice and record melt.
This is the definition of ‘blackwhite’ in George Orwell’s ‘1984’
He was way ahead of the climate Alarminati.
“ …this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as doublethink. ”
