Stranded, they dig up troves of Antarctic data
Rescued scientists bring back a warning about changes at the southern ice cap
Media interest in the expedition faded after the rescue, but in the year since expedition leader Chris Turney and his team have been busy. Scientific samples and measurements from the voyage are being turned into research papers that reveal striking changes at the southern ice cap. And rather than feeling discouraged about expeditions that are funded by paying passengers, Mr. Turney is more enthusiastic than ever.
“Once we got back home and made sure everyone was all right, we got on with working up the data and getting a whole load of papers ready for submission,” he said.
Like the rescue mission, this involved plenty of waiting. “It took nearly six months to get all the samples through quarantine.” Simple observations told unhappy stories. Trawls of water reeled in hauls of plastic rubbish, now seemingly ubiquitous in the world’s oceans. On land, counts of Adelie penguins revealed the population had slumped near Mawson’s huts in Commonwealth Bay in East Antarctica. The birds are now commuting 40 miles to get food for their young.
In other words, the amount of sea ice is increasing, so the penguins moved.
They have absolutely no shame.
Turney is either delusional or at ultimate snake oil salesman.
Completely delusional.
Actually he is a classic example of the <a href="http://www.economictheories.org/2008/12/philosophy-of-karl-marx.html" Marx/Hegel Philosophy
Why else would he deliberately ignore the direct order of the Ship’s Captain to return to the ship ASAP and put his own family, his children in jeopardy. He allowed his son onto the ice knowing there was a blizzard forecast for the immediate future.
Also at the time the scientists were on ‘vacation’ having already completed all their studies so the stop was just for fun and for photo-ops for the Green Party Senator, Janet Rice. She was with the Christmas Turkey when he took off for a couple of hours with the second vehicle. The third had sunk.
“Scientific samples and measurements from the voyage are being turned into research papers…”
Oh joy! Research papers on water samples and penguin poop collected by drunks. I can barely contain my excitement.
I can see how running out of beer and gin-and-tonic could have been a problem. Somebody might have thought “What the hell am I doing here?”
Don’t forget the BBC correspondent and his peanut butter and banana milkshakes….
I vote snake oil. His actions are too methodically deceitful to be simple delusion. For example, his statement above, “The birds are now commuting 40 miles to get food for their young” with none of the obvious qualifying details.
Sounds like his training is in marketing and sales, sans the ethics courses.
It’s basic human nature:
“My dog is a good dog, he wouldn’t hurt nobody!”
Dog bites postman.
“It was his hat, this dog don’t like hats, but he’s a good dog.”
Dog bites hatless guy.
“He’s scared & wuz trying to protect me.”
Dog bites 4’10” asian woman & a baby.
“He was just playing, he didn’t mean no harm.”
Dog kills small child.
etc etc
That was my neighbor across the street.
I had to fend the dog off with my bike one day for about a half hour and the next I had to hop into the bed of my pickup when I tried to pickup the mail. The owner showed and called the dog off. At which point I told her the dog was dangerous to strangers. I got the crap you just posted.
I know dogs and that dog meant business and wanted to rip my face off. Well two days later he ripped the face off the little 5 year old girl next door. Took out her eye and the flesh down to the skull.
I happened to run into the Animal Control Officer as she came to pick-up the dog and told her the dog attacked me twice and I had just told that to the owner two days before. She wrote it all down.
I certainly hope the animal was put down and that the owner spent some hard jail time for their carelessness and the harm it had caused.
I wasn’t really wanting to discuss dogs. The point being that Turkey believes the ice is melting, & no amount of ice, & no matter what effect it has on him personally, will convince him otherwise. It’s all the same mentality: I refuse to believe that x is true, therefor I will make excuses & concoct weird fantasies even when it gets someone killed. You can only hope that Turkey’s shenanigans result in his own death & not someone else’s.
I know but Turney has unbreakable habits just like an egg-sucking dog. Here is another researcher at work—confronted by members of the productive classes who came to inspect the damage and recover what’s left after the science is done:

Most taxpayers do less than that.
“My dog is a good dog, he wouldn’t hurt nobody! [nobody in my family anyway]”
Your too nice a person Gail. I Love dogs but have ended ones time on this earth with a sudden lead poisoning when for the second time he came on my land and tried to attack my dog. The owner was warned the first time and did not heed the warning. You live in the outside of the city limits in most states you can get away with that kind of thing. He called the law thinking he would get me into trouble. It was he that got the strong talking to by the deputy though.
Unfortunately the dog was in the People’s Republic of Taxachusetts.
I certainly agree with you and have had more than one dog picked up by animal control when they cam sniffing around my sheep and goats. Those were the lucky ones.
shoot shovel and shutup
Ernest Shackleton left a log of his daily passage through the pack ice in 1914.
The edge of the pack ice then was just where it is now, at least around the peninsula where he sailed.

Not much changes, does it?
No, it doesn’t and there is a nice phrase in French for it :).
I bet the penguins thought the humans were zoo animals and walked 40 miles to view them. 🙂
His comment about the penguin commute makes one wonder what he thinks penguins eat, what they’re commuting across, and the implications of both. He’s either too idiotic to put two logical thoughts together, is hoping his readers can’t, or both.
I wonder if he ever did plant all those Kauri trees he promised
Amazing, the productivity of “loads” of papers from a few hours struggling to get ashore. For these people, the creation of “papers” is just an exercise in creative story telling. The expedition was just the cover story for a variety of fanciful creations to be called “science”. No legitimate scientist would show up for a snapshot of any subject, and from that, build anything of consequence. If they were to spend weeks every year in the same location, for ten years running, there is a limit to what they could deduce. Complete frauds.
Dang Al Pole, you stole my thought.
What sort of coherent paper (let alone paperS) can possibly be derived from a ship stuck in the ice or from a few days (correct?) making scratch observations (probably by green-wienie tourists). Ah me.
The expedition didn’t have scholars in the right disciplines on board. There was enough material for good papers:

I stand corrected. There are enough papers here to keep clinical psychology in clover for at least a decade.
According to Wikipedia itself the small decrease in penguin population in some parts has been more than offset by increases in others. A 53 percent increase in breeding pairs in fact since last survey.
I’m sure he’s talking about the rough drafts smeared on the ship’s toilet paper..
Ok, who ended up paying for all the rescue efforts? Let guess. The Tax Payers?
