Our friends believe that the Arctic looks like the picture below, dated January 17. The ice is melting, temperatures are above freezing. Commercial ships are happily sailing from Europe to Asia, occasionally dodging a small ice cube.
Somehow though, when Arctic air arrives in the US – it becomes extremely cold. For example, -35F at International Falls, Minnesota this weekend.
Using the Far Left Law Of Thermodynamics, the refrigerator door is left open. As the cold air from the north mixes with warmer air from the south, the cold air gets much colder.
These geniuses are in control of our government.
Not only that, but now we’re having to waste time undoing what they did………
and it’s still not about jobs
That’s a very good point Steven.
All poiticians should be required to spend a week up in THIS:

That must be a different Arctic! I didn’t know there were any mountains in the Arctic.
Or… maybe the pic is not a picture of the Arctic at all. But it still works to fool some of the people some of the time.
That is a photo of the Island at the North Pole where Santa’s work shop is located. Any 4 year old could tell you that! 😉
The Arctic includes the Arctic Ocean, parts of Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Russia, the United States (Alaska), Sweden, Norway and Finland. Lots and lots of mountains.
This the trouble about sCeptics — they don’t know sht about anything, but think they know everything.
Ah, so you think there is ocean underneath the mountains.
That sure looks like those 3 fingers are pointing hard at you drewski.
Note: While all have been civil to you, you continue to post nothing but insults – even though you are guilty of every crime you spew at others.
Run Stupid, Run Deep!
Keep on ’em , Steve! Love your blog!
Thanks!
Well, obviously, you guys don’t understand thermal gravity. As you can see, the weather is going in a downward motion. Downward…….so the temps go downward, too……..duh. Plus, hot air rises………duh. I would have thought warmcold was all that needed stated, but we have to go into detail for some. It will all be spelled out in Dr. Syme’s paper.
Off to check trigonometric properties of spheres on a felt covered plane.
Rick, those are trees
What’s all that Ice doing in the picture? I thought the arctic was the new Hawaii?
Steven, I think you’re conflating the Arctic’s air temperature, which plummets as solar radiation virtually disappears during the winter, with ocean temperature. The ocean’s thermal inertia is relatively enormous.
You mean the ocean underneath the ice – which is not exposed to the air?
Your satirical comment – “Using the Far Left Law Of Thermodynamics, the refrigerator door is left open. As the cold air from the north mixes with warmer air from the south, the cold air gets much colder” – caught my attention. Although, it was genuinely funny, I was honestly confused about how you got there.
Your opened the post with “The ice is melting, temperatures are above freezing.” This is true during the arctic summer, even before global warming. The decline in the ice’s average volume is the metric of interest, and hard to dispute.
Your next statement was – “Somehow though, when Arctic air arrives in the US – it becomes extremely cold. For example, -35F at International Falls, Minnesota this weekend.”. – The Canadian interior, the source of most air masses moving into Minnesota, is much colder than the areas near bodies of water. Though not able to find a temperature map from the date of the Minneapolis cold front, I suspect that the air mass was colder in the northern parts of that weather system. Wide temperature variations across longitudes are typical.
Finally, after a closer look at the accuweather.com map, the “Turning Cold” annotation may have been what you were joking about.
(By the way, I suspect that the water temperature directly under the ice is about as close to its freezing point as it can get.) Cheers.
It does look like that blocking high pressure is gone from the Hudson Bay to Greenland area. It looks like the cold will cover all the way to New York and down to Alabama. The severe cold wasn’t getting eastward past Minnesota before because that high pressure was stopping it.
With that blocking gone should the Hudson Bay finish freezing now?
Hudson Bay is frozen over.
Northern Hemisphere sea ice extent in December 2010 was the LOWEST in the 31-year satellite record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Ice volume in December was also the lowest on record for this time of year, according to University of Washington Polar Ice Center. At the end of December, the eastern portion of Canada’s Hudson Bay remained unfrozen, the FIRST TIME IN RECORDED HISTORY that Hudson Bay has not been completely frozen over at the end of the year. The unusual amount of open water led to temperatures that averaged 20°C (36°F) above normal over a region larger than Texas during the first ten days of January.
20°C (36°F) above normal — HOLY MOLY!!
Drewski:
You should have gone there for a visit during the warm period. You could have done a bit of swimming and visiting the Polar Bears!
Take a minute and think about what the temperature actually was! Not the anomaly but the actual temperature.
@ drewski……….ahahahahahahahaahh!!!!!
“The unusual amount of open water led to temperatures that averaged 20°C (36°F) above normal over a region larger than Texas during the first ten days of January.”
Yeppers, folks, there it is.
drewski……show me the unusual amount of open water. Please. Please don’t show me someone else’ hyperbole, show me the unusual open water be it with pics or data. Give me a chart or a graph. And then show me how it is unusual.
You know, I’m sick of seeing people spewing shit that other people state without checking the veracity themselves. I think there’s a scientist out there that would say we’re going to burn to death by the year 2020……….oh, wait, there is. It was published and everything.
drew, you check the temps today?
…..whistles while cleaning up drewski’s little poops – I use plastic !…..
This is sick. I’m tired of trying to talk reason into a bunch of murderous totalitarians. People are dying today because of the policies and laws we’ve put in place to guard us against some fictional human caused warming. Food and fuel prices have escalated because of this insanity. It’s time to stop screwing with them and ask, how many lives will satisfy their blood lust. Or is it only people the differ with?
Many other places have been abnormally cold, especially in the middle latitudes where most people live. Also, snow cover has been well above average for North America and the Northern Hemisphere during the last two winters.
It’s AGW miracle #12

Incredible as it is to believe but here is ANOTHER Steve Goddard blog in which no one (except me, of course) supports their arguments with even the slightest hint of evidence. Do you guys have any shame?
Well I suppose I should mention the two posts in which a citation (chuckle chuckle) was made: The first by BioBob — http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northpole/webphotos/noaa2.jpg — links you to a completely blacked out picture (is that the inside of your head Bob?) and the second one by omnologos — http://omniclimate.wordpress.com/why-agw-is-logically-impossible/ — just links you to a litany of unfounded and substantiated opinions supported by lots and lots of “inspiration”.
What a joke.
Thanks to you, we know that the cold air is coming from oceans underneath the mountains.
That was too funny, I’m still laughing! HEHEHEHEHAHAHAHOOO.
There goes those 3 fingers again! Must be getting cramped pointing at you for all the vitriol and lies you spew.
Nah, that was a link to the last available NOAA photo of the north pole. The point being that January in the polar region is sunless, cold, and hostile to humans.
always with the negative waves …..want me to use paper or plastic to clean up your little poop >

And here I thought creationist were extreme in thinking the world was only 6000 years old. now comes Creationist II – a guy who thinks the world is only 31 years old!
Quoting the Cool Whip Cowboy’s quote…
“the FIRST TIME IN RECORDED HISTORY that Hudson Bay has not been completely frozen over at the end of the year.” So, there was more ice during the RWP and MWP than there was in Dec 2010? Both those periods occurred well within our recorded history. In fact a recent peer reviewed paper concluded that there is more ice now than the average of the past 9000 years.
Maybe your alarmist author should have properly stated that there is less ice now than in the past 40 years, and left the caps lock off. Oh and yes further, and if he were an honest person, he would have put that information in the proper context. Explaining what we do know about cycles of ice and no ice, warming and cooling.
CWC, aka Drewski, I think we see why you are so very confused when we see what garbage you read. GIGO!
