To those of us living in Boulder and surrounding communities, it may come as a surprise that many people remain unconvinced that the use of fossil fuels is the main contributor to current climate change

An example of what happens when such concentrations are too high can be seen by looking at our planetary neighbor, Venus: the Venusian atmosphere is more than 96 percent carbon dioxide (compared to 0.038 percent on Earth), and the temperature can reach 460 C, which is hotter than your oven can get. On the other hand, the planet Mars has a very thin atmosphere is quite cold at -63 degrees C (-81 F). Venus, Earth and Mars are often referred to as the “Goldilocks” planets. Venus is the porridge that is too hot, Mars is porridge that is too cold and Earth is just right.

Mars also has 96% CO2 in its atmosphere and is brutally cold. The reason Venus is hot is because of the high atmospheric pressure, not the chemical composition of the atmosphere.

    They aren’t very consistent, they mention the thin atmosphere for Mars but only mention the CO2 for Venus, so painting a skewed picture.

    yeh but…….. uhmm….. you see, its way different…..because the space difference…..well uhm yeh, I mean, you know….. so it could be the difference of space but it’s really CO2, even though earth’s is much lower, that proves Venus…….no wait, it shows that Mars……well shoot…..damnit just know that its bad because Venus and Mars!!!

        lol, I had tooo many last night and after several attempts at spelling the slang, I settled on that.

        Apparently, the herb referenced in my “beaugaurding” is probably of Haitian origin while the herb in referenced in your “bogarting” would be of the rough hewn home grown variety.

      We have said all along that CO2 can cause extreme heat, and through that extreme heat, extreme cold. What you see in Mars and Venus just reinforces our consesus. The fact is the high concentration of CO2 indeed causes Venus to be hot, but also as we have said all along, through CO2 heating, more extreme events are caused, and therefore Mars is colder, through extreme cold events, cause by heating.

      lol, well I was going to say that after I took a hit, but it sounds way cooler to say CO2 sucks and we suck because we recycle CO2..wait, no, I mean…….doood!!! That was too deep!

    Venus is the closer planet to the Sun of the three therefore it has more gravitational stress caused by the sun which in turn, is responsible for a heightened state of volcanic activity (90% of the landforms are volcanic), this is the main cause of the large clouds of sulfuric acid surrounding the planet and its thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide.

    Venus also spins slowly retrograde (backwards west to east) in 243 days and takes about 225 days to orbit the sun. This makes the daytime about 115 days which can raise surface temperatures up to 464° C. Because it is only slightly tilted on its axis, it has no real seasonal variation in temperature as does Earth.

    It is made up primarily of carbon dioxide and exerts an estimated 1,323 pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure on the planet, roughly 90 times more pressure than Earth’s atmosphere.

    As you can clearly see, with Venus any “greenhouse effect” on surface temperature is the result of massive forces including it’s close proximity and physical relationship with the sun, So, “compared to 0.038 percent on Earth”,
    Even if there is .04% CO2 in the Earth’s Atmosphere and of that “Man” has added an extra 4% (1 part in 62,500) and considering all the other extreme ingredients that would be involved in causing similar effect here on Earth, Then,

    It may NOT come as a surprise that many people remain unconvinced that the use of fossil fuels as the main contributor to current climate change and it’s ridiculous logic, unscientific articles of unfounded fearful propaganda induced bed wetting.

      And Earth has a higher atmospheric pressure than Mars. Co2 by itself can’t do much. Water vapour is the key.

    I guess all that Venusian CO2 is also the cause of all those Venusian volcanoes?

    Just the other day I saw a “documentary” on TV say, as they flew around an animated landscape full of Venusian lava flows, “this is what could happen to Earth due to greenhouse gasses…”

    Don’t worry he was also off by about 100 years regarding the industrial revolution. It started in mid to late 1700s not late in the 1800s.

    Venus also gets a lot more TSI than Earth or Mars. I think it’s roughly 2x what we get and I think Mars gets roughly 1/2 of what we get.

    If you look at Mercury, on its sunny side it’s about as hot as Venus. It’s distance to the sun isn’t that much different than the distance of Venus compared to the distances of earth vs venus.

    • Venus is continuously covered with thick clouds that reflect most of the sunlight. That is what Venus looks so bright. The surface of Venus is actually rather dimly lit, and goes through months at a time with no sunlight.
