Einstein : “Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.”

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, February 18, 2002  The Alpine skiiers competing in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games are zooming downhill at the Snowbasin Ski Area over a firm base of snow 65 inches deep topped with packed powder.

But global warming threatens the success of future Winter Olympic Games, because snows will not occur reliably or pile up deeply enough to support them, according to the World Resources Institute.

Jonathan Lash, president of the Washington, DC based think tank, held a news conference in Salt Lake City today to warn the international athletes, coaches and officials gathered in Utah for the games of the consequences climate change may have for their sports.

Global warming threatens future Winter Olympic Games because it is resulting in less snow, and shorter and warmer winters, said Lash. Just as Salt Lake has done, we urge potential host cities to seriously consider the consequences of global warming in planning future Winter Olympic Games.

Record snowfall at California ski resorts

Seasonal snowfall records have been set at some California ski resorts, including Squaw Valley USA near the north shore of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly Mountain Resort on the lake’s south side and Mammoth Mountain, the sprawling eastern Sierra resort that attracts Southern California skiers and snowboarders.

More than 61 feet of snow has fallen in the 400-mile-long Sierra Nevada this season, second only to the 1950-51 season when 65 feet fell, according to California Department of Transportation records. Although spring has arrived, the Sierra typically gets some snow in April, bringing the prospect of an all-time record.

At Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics, ski patrol guides had to create tunnels just to reach their warming huts, and avalanches broke out windows at two lift stations. Nearly 59 feet of snow has fallen there this winter, beating the old record by 29 inches.

Squaw is extending its season through Memorial Day, while Mammoth, with a peak elevation exceeding 11,000 feet, might remain open through Fourth of July.

“To defeat relativity one did not need the word of 100 scientists, just one fact.”

    I hope I quoted right.

Since AGW causes everything, this is totally consistent.

“Jonathan Lash, president of the Washington, DC based think tank…”

Why do some many AGW industry “think tanks” do so little thinking? Need a new term for them. Maybe ‘parrot cages’… and then they might be forced to look at the latest newspaper under them, so maybe not.

It’s still snowing in the mountains in California. It’s been a cool Spring.

  5. Al Gored says:

Where’s the ‘think tank’ that discovered Einstein’s mistake?

It isn’t e = mc2. Recent models may have shown that it is actually e = mCO2, where e = emergency!!! planetary fever, m = manmade/its all our fault, and CO2 is an incredibly dangerous form of carbon pollution associated with evil capitalism that refuses to let any of the laws of physics work as they do in the rest of the universe.

Einstein? You mean, the quantum physics denier?

    • Amino Acids in Meteorites says:

      Good one.

The things he said about quantum physics, as time goes by, they find more and more that he was right.

Uh, Steve, WTF R U? You suddenly have the most active and entertaining (instead of WUWT whining) blog on climate around. Via Tom Nelson I have started to notice your work. I use Tom Nelson (http://tomnelson.wordpress.com) to daily discover high readership news stories that allow comments which allow me to reach 1K or 10K people at a time without needing to maintain a blog myself. I just create single glance graphics that ass kick the very idea that recent warming is at all odd.

I’m quite curious about how you (who I assume are a solitary person?) and if you are just another hack like me or if you have some sort of support network (Climate Depot related?). Your blog tends to cheer me up.

However, one issue I have is the same I have with many skeptical blogs. You so often comment on a fairly high readership online article but you don’t link to you blog entry about it within that article’s comments section. Thus regular readers stuck in the information bubble of a given news site do not have the wonderful opportunity to have a glistening diamond shot through their forehead, thus waking them up.

Am I the *only* one out here trying to reach the masses through the delightful loophole of comments under alarmist news blurbs?

My background is a midwestern (USA) high IQ hippie who got into Columbia U as by far the best grad school in chemistry I was accepted into. I still live there, two blocks down from Tom’s Diner (otherwise known as the NASA GISS “GODDARD” building). I occasionally see James Hanson shopping for his own groceries. He walks like a driven man, one I can hardly keep up with. I’ve never seen Gavin around though. Eventually I’ll chat those guys up if I see them in a cafe. I’ll show them my little postcard charts (http://i49.tinypic.com/rc93fa.jpg / http://i49.tinypic.com/2mpg0tz.jpg).

What I eventually need are a couple new ideas for “single silver bullet” debunkings of AGW in order to make new single glance graphics.

It’s a bit trippy. I can sit in a steamy bathroom, in a folding canvas hang out chair, with a pocket computer invented by Steve Jobs and Co., and reach MILLIONS of readers a year by adding comments to news articles. It’s like how fax machines and bootleg cassette tape copies of ‘The Wall’ by Pink Floyd helped bring down the commies in Russia, back in the 80s.

I transferred my passion from academic science after passing from Columbia to Harvard to business to small business and then my own product design studio. So I need to take breaks throughout the day. A great break (besides getting laid via eHarmony) is the defense of science against charlatanism. Are you on the same team or are you actually the much feared oil industry stooge the alarmists suggest exists as a corrupt force akin to tobacco industry wise guys?

Hansen…..He walks like a driven man

      Driven man or driven mad?

    • Thanks Nik,

I have no involvement or support from any energy (or other) industry. In fact I am a hard core cyclist and hate cars. I would love to see 90% of them off the road. I am a scientist/engineer who got suckered by the global warming idea for about 30 years before I decided to look for myself. Most of the work I do is extremely difficult, and this blog provides a chance to do something easy while sitting at the computer. So much low hanging fruit in the junk science world.

Most alarmist blogs like Romm/Tamino/RC just censor my comments (even when the article is about me.)

      • -=NikFromNYC=- says:

Trying to convert cultists is banal. The masses are more open minded. I agree that this is easy, thanks to Al Gore’s Internet! If I see your posts that *do* allow comments to a mass audience below the main article involved, I might give myself permission to back link to your posts about that article. I don’t mind signing up for passwords on news sites. I have a fast connection and can type fast too. Wine and home made beef jerky help me stay creative so I don’t just show up in comments as some Republican.

Tamino censored this expose on the CET temperature record: http://oi49.tinypic.com/w1g68.jpg

What most drives me though is that science itself needs good men to carry it through this inconvenient era.

“To how many places does nature carry out PI when she makes each successive bubble in the white-cresting surf of each successive wave before nature finds out that PI can never be resolved?… And at what moment in the making of each separate bubble in Universe does nature decide to terminate her eternally frustrated calculating and instead turn out a fake sphere? I answered myself that I don’t think nature is using PI or any of the irrational fraction constants of physics.” (Synergetics II, p. 233).

Years ago a guy gave me a book about numbers in the Bible. He thought I had a lot of energy and would want to use it on studying numbers. He was a bit condescending. I looked at it, a little. It seemed all contrived, imagined. I just didn’t see the patterns the book was trying to bring out. Then later on a friend told me the two biggest names in Bible numerology were both in insane asylums. They were trying to find numbers in everything. It made them literally crazy. I forgot what I did with the book.

Don’t waste your time Amino. The truth can only be discerned by playing old Black Sabbath LPs backwards. In the proper setting – black light posters, a strobe light, and sufficient Rastaferian religious herbs – it all becomes perfectly clear… at the time… and then, as is the way with all sacred truth, it does not allow you to remember it lest your brain turn to mush with the thrill of the all-knowing epiphany. I suspect this was the path of many current AGW prophets.
