GISS Vs NCDC Using The Same Baseline

Some readers complained that GISS uses a different baseline (1851-1980) than NCDC (1901-2000) – so my blink comparator (below) wasn’t fair.

Here is the same thing with GISS using a 1901-2000 baseline. A little better, but GISS is still far off the mark.

Below shows GISS cherry-picked baseline (1951-1980) vs GISS with a 1901-2000 baseline.

Joe Bastardi writes :

Hansen is comparing his data to 1951 to 1980 data, pre satellite, COLD PDO 90% OF THE TIME, Cold AMO 80% . He has free reign to adjust pre satellite temps DOWN and can not monkey with the 30 year record from 1980 on. Simple solution, keep adjusting down the colder period. No sweat.

Is is obviously despicable and non applicable for three reasons 1) The NATURAL DRIVERS which he wants us to ignore were stacked for cold. 2) The way of measuring temperatures then is different from now 3) He is simply doing whatever he wants and has license to get away with it, since he can reasonably argue it is “accepted” data

If he wants to truly compare, start the clock running in 1978 when satellites came on and watch it as the natural cycles change. But in his world of win at all costs, why would he do that when he has a herd of sheep following him that wish everyone else to become sheep with them.

In fact, that is what this whole thing comes down too, a few sheep herders leading unsuspecting sheep to the slaughter. Hansen, for whatever you wish to say about him, certainly uses his sheep-dogs ( things like this data) well to drive home his point. You gotta give him that.

Read the date its being compared too, and understand what they are doing with that period ( making it colder) and you have how he does it. And gets away with it

When a group of BSAs builds their product on top of the work of another group of BSAs then you see the real results of having a PHD were they learned to Pile Higher and Deeper!
NCDC is in the business of promoting NCDC and it appears they took lessons from Billy Mays and other Snake Oil salesmen.

it’s not the PDO, the UHI, ENSO, trees, rocks and ice, and on and on….

….it’s been the adjustments to the temperature record since day one

That’s the only place you can get 1/2 degree….
…which is also smaller than their margin of error

    • Mike Davis says:

Yes! BSA (Bull @@@@ Artists) are good at making Stuff up to support their claims. Climate Science is full of those that learned to Pile Higher and Deeper! PHD

Living in Michigan I can say without hesitation GISS is a load of dung.

Personally I’m looking forward to glc applying his Numerology skills detailing how GISS is in “good agreement with” every other temperature product, and that the surface warming faster than the lower troposphere is perfectly consistent with AGW theory.

  5. Andy Weiss says:

Starting your data set in 1978 virtually guarantees warming because it was one of the coldest years on record.

    Doesn’t NCDC use a 1971-2000 baseline?

    • Mike Davis says:

It all depends on what they want to show. Some times they use a cherry start date such as 1900 or earlier. For the most part they use the most recent 30 years and they will probably switch to 1981 – 2010 soon. They used to switch and that is why they use 1971 to 2000 which is standard for the WMO. Or was! Hadley picked the period that best fit their agenda.

I am beginning to wonder if James Hansen has a conscience.
