NYT 2000 : “never before been seen by humans”

The North Pole is melting.

The thick ice that has for ages covered the Arctic Ocean at the pole has turned to water, recent visitors there reported yesterday. At least for the time being, an ice-free patch of ocean about a mile wide has opened at the very top of the world, something that has presumably never before been seen by humans and is more evidence that global warming may be real and already affecting climate.

The last time scientists can be certain the pole was awash in water was more than 50 million years ago.

Here are some humans who saw it in 1959, which is less than 50 million years ago.

Again, no modest research of the “50 million years ago” throw away comment either. If they’d looked they would quickly have seen that the Arctic ice only showed up between 3 and 4 million years ago, and as recent as 5,000 years ago, there were still periods of ice free summers.

  2. Well, those were military personnel, and the NYT don’t believe that the US military are human.

  3. PhilJourdan says:

50 million years ago – I guess NYT years are like dog years. Except even more of them to human years. Which kind of begs the question – what exactly are the things running the NYT?

Ice free Arctic central Arctic ocean during the last 12,000 years.

  5. Laurence Crossen says:

Openings in the ice all over the Arctic occur occasionally called “polyanas”.

Since y’all ain’t watched Das Boot, a movie, you painstakingly now promote a mistaken crooked-elbow geek anti-paradise, fellow fat-ass comrade breeder buffoons, all around and two times flat.

    Oh look! Nerd Town Paradise.

    “I could live there!”

    Say you.

Do not let intuition or love to enter onto your heart!

    Old fart.

    That would not be “smart.”

Shame is painted on you, useless worker bee, and grand pappie.

    Voting about the weather?

This wont even go down in history.

Bookmarking this thread to shove down the throats of anyone that cites the New York Slimes ever again. As many have pointed out, the statement: “The last time scientists can be certain the pole was awash in water was more than 50 million years ago.” is insane. Even Omni magazine was more scientific.

If you follow the link Steve put up there you will see that the NY Slimes added a wordy correction! Here it is …

Correction: August 29, 2000, Tuesday A front-page article on Aug. 19 and a brief report on Aug. 20 in The Week in Review about the sighting of open water at the North Pole misstated the normal conditions of the sea ice there. A clear spot has probably opened at the pole before, scientists say, because about 10 percent of the Arctic Ocean is clear of ice in a typical summer. The reports also referred incompletely to the link between the open water and global warming. The lack of ice at the pole is not necessarily related to global warming. New studies of the polar icepack and its recent changes are reported today in Science Times on Page F3.

Not very clear is it? Vague and obsfucating. They should have just said ‘we screwed the pooch on that 50 million years thing, our bad‘. But the New York Slimes cannot do that. The fifth columnists employed by this domestic enemy newspaper do not have the ability to admit error. Have a look at the re-written article …

    Correction Appended

Over the last century, the average surface temperature of the globe has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit, and the rate of warming has accelerated in the last quarter-century. That is a significant amount, considering that the world is only 5 to 9 degrees warmer now than it was in the last ice age, 18,000 to 20,000 years ago.

Scientists and policy makers are still arguing about whether this is a natural fluctuation or an effect of industrial society’s releasing heat-trapping gasses into the atmosphere.

”Some folks who pooh-pooh global warming might wake up if shown that even the pole is beginning to melt at least sometimes, as in the Eocene,” Dr. McKenna said.

The Eocene was the geological period when the world’s climate grew significantly warmer. Around 55 million years ago, according to sedimentary and fossil evidence, tropical vegetation spread inside the Arctic and Antarctic circles.

Water and jungles dominated the polar environments, and in the generally warm world, mammals for the first time grew in number, size and diversity.

Yes, AGW all the time, 24/7/365. When the lights go out for the last time at this so-called newspaper, the USA and the world will be a better place.
